I have tried to install win98,winnt 4.0 and linux on my pc.In my pc I have two hard drives. One contains WIN98 and I am going to install the others on the next hard drive. I installed WINNT and tried to edit the boot loader
(BOOT.ini) to have the "WIN98" option at boot. (I used the entry d:\="win98". Win 98 is in drive D http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif But when I choose the WIN98 option form the boot loader menu the whole system halts. What seems to be the problem?

I'll assume that at one time your "D" drive was a "C" drive that booted Windows 98. Now you have a new C drive that you have installed NT on. The problem is that when you install NT it looks at the Boot sector of the "C" drive (or system partition) to see if any other operating systems exist on this drive. If they don't the System partition wil not contain the options or files (bootsect.dos) needed to dual boot your system. Sorry , but no amount of Boot.ini editing will fix that.

What I would do is assign your "D" drive back to "C" and install NT again. When it reaches the point where it ask what location you want the NT directory installed at choose your D drive and the boot.ini file will be edited correctly for you. ( C will contain Windows98 and D will contain WindowsNT) One other note this will only work if the System partition is formatted in FAT16. If it's formatted in FAT32 NT will not install or boot.

Another option is to get bootmagic which (I belive, having never used it myself) will let you boot between the different OS without going thur the above steps.

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

lenagala Please confine all your questions concerning multiple boot systems to one topic, this is about 3 so far in different areas, that could all be handled in one topic.

This puts all of us answering 2 or 3 times, and sometimes not realizing it's all related to the same person's system.

Soon as I come up with all the answers...they change the questions!!
