An illegal operation message occurs when trying to change Screen Saver Settings. This is a Windows 98 2nd Edition system.

I restored Kernel32.dll, which was referenced by this or some other error on the system. I am not sure whether or not this changed the symptoms (it is not my system).

At present, the symptoms are as follows. If system is unattended long enough for screen saver to activate, an illegal operation message occurs. After Right click on Desk Top and an attempt to modify Screen Saver Settings, the error occurs. Otherwise the system works okay. The Error Details refer to GLSIS530.dll, which I have not been able to find on my Windows 98 2nd Edition CD nor in the Win98 Folder on the system with the problem. I used System File Checker to hunt for it on the CD, so am pretty sure it is not in one of the .cab Files.

The system is used by a house wife who works at home and makes money with the system. She has special Word Processor Spell-check dictionaries and other custom features set up to facilitate her work. It would be a royal pain to do a full reinstall.

The system could be returned to the vendor, but this would lose several days, which she wants to avoid. Unfortunately, there is a communication problem with the vendor I do not speak any oriental language, and their English is weak.

If I knew some very specific questions to ask, I could probably manage to get answers from the vendor.

Does anybody know about GLSIS530.dll? I am pretty sure that this is referenced in the error message details. Perhaps the "I" is a numeral one.

Are there any .cab files on the Windows 98 Cd which would not be found by System File Checker? I could use another utility to hunt if it was likely to find anything.

Might the desk top controls have been installed as part of The software which came with the Video Controller? Perhaps reinstall of the video software would solve the problem.

Would installing Plus for Windows 98 be likely to replace the software used for Screen Savers and related features? I have a Plus 98 CD.

I have never investigated a partial reinstall of Windows 98. Is a partial reinstall possible?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The dll may be related to a GL driver for an SIS 530 video chipset.
You can download drivers from SIS 530 driver (http://www.sis.com.tw/support/download/530.htm).

Does she have her files backed up? I'd be nervous about the prospect of possibly losing the data on the hard drive if something were to go wrong while reloading software. A backup hard drive and cloning software would be good insurance.

You might try going to Start\Settings\Control Panel and double click Add/Remove Programs In the Windows Setup tab uninstall then reinstall screensavers, in Accessories. You'll need the Windows CD or the files stored on the hard drive.

And Reid's advice about backing up info makes good sense too...

[Everybody,[/B] Thanx for the prompt help.

Reid, your mention of the SIS 530 chip set looks like the first thing I should investigate. The house wife might even have a CD with the drivers which were installed by the vendor.
