I have a Linux box that does not show up in Network 'hood.

The Linux box can connect to the Windows machines using smbclient or smbmount and the Windows2000 machines can connect to the Linux box using the "net use" command or simply "run".

But how the heck do I get it to show in net 'hood. Is there someother smb.conf line that needs to be changed other than the "workgroup" setting?

Thanks for any tid bits of knowledge you can give http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Do you see the Linux machine when you use 'net view' in a Win command box? If yes you should see it in NetNeighborbood. Just a thought... in Win2000 check the system log to see if there are any messages about the linux box and 'master browser'.

Other than the workgroup name the only line I change in smb.conf is
hosts allow =
Where you enter the IP's of machines allow to access samba.

Presumeably you have the access level set as the default (security = user)? And you created a ordinary user account on the linux box (other than root)?

I'm grasping here, as I don't have a network card in this new machine and can't access my Linux machine. It's next to me, running, but no keyboard or monitor. Pretty d*mn silly what?

Thanks for the reply Sleddog... No I didn't even think to try "net view". That will be the next thing I try on Monday. The Linux box shouldn't force any elections on the network because I turned that off in the smb.conf file.

Could that be what the problem is?

Yep, I do have the security set to user and a user account that has the same ID and password as my Win2000 one. I also had to add the "encrypt=yes" line to my smb.conf file and do a few other things to actual encrypt the passwords

Thanks for the heads-up on that one.

I have this for my "host allow" line 10.0.0 I assumed that would enable any machine on that subnet to access the Linux box. ( or should the line read 10.0.0.0\24) I'll try adding the Domain Controller's address and see if that works

Again thanks for the help http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
