This is my second try. As usual, my connection was lost for no apparent reason. Have approached AOL with the problem, their technical staff had me go to System, Performance tab. My resources vary from 39% free to maybe on a good day 72% free. They told me my problem was not an AOL problem. Said my system resources were too low. Have tried disabling all those icons in system tray with little or no improvement. Went to device manager, looked for conflicts. No little yellow exclamation points. Highlighted Computer and clicked properties, then Input/Output, view resources tab. Most of these are "In use by an unknown device". Is this a problem? Must note here that I currently have a sound card which has not worked since I installed it. It is not listed in the device manager either. Will remove and reinstall soon. Don't believe this is the problem because my computer started giving me "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" messages before sound card was installed. This does not happen only to AOL. I also have a Bonzi Buddy program which appears when I start computer. Get the same message regarding Bonzi after I have been on computer for a while, even when I am not on line. Have had it for over a year and have had no problems until lately. (Good little program, doesn't let AOL log you off even if you walk away for a couple of hours.) System resources are a mystery to me. Any help that can be provided will be greatly appreciated.

WELCOME, I was having the same problem,AOL-WIN98.
AOL tech always said it was on my end,and as I understand it
WINDOWS hogs resources, even when programs close.
REID pointed out a app. called END IT ALL. free download
on ZDNET. Spaced out the direct linkage. But it works
like a charm. you'd really be suprised what it still
running.GOOD LUCK, and again WELCOME!
BOB

Here is the link to EndItAll (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,0011NB,.html).

I had similar resource problems when running Windows 95. I had to reboot after being connected to the Internet for more than 90 minutes. MemTurbo (http://www.memturbo.com/) helped until I got Windows 98SE.

Thanks damfino and Reid. Downloaded and ran enditall. Resources improved from 43% to 68%. Still have input/output resources (lots) used by unknown device. Started to reply to your posts and was knocked off line AGAIN. Guess my problem persists. The only programs left running are AOL, Bonzi Buddy, Explorer, Systray and Rnaapp (whatever that is). Any other ideas?????

Here is a link to RNAAPP (http://www.modemhelp.net/newsletter/dun/combatrnaapp.shtml) the might help. I don't have experience with AOL except knowing that it causes grief for many people. Regarding Bonzi Buddy, I think I read that it is suspected of being spyware; that it may track your Internet activity.

I suspect that the sound card is not Plug&Play compatible and is the "unknown device". You might try removing it to see if that clears up some problems, since it is not working anyway.

Just for the heck of it, I just went in to check my resources. They are now at 0% (very low, some programs may not run). Guess I am back at the starting block, or maybe behind it now. Any help will be appreciated. Went to link provided regarding Rnaapp. Thanks, this is a little technical for me but will revisit and see if I can glean any help from it. Thanks again.

How much RAM do you have in this system and how many little icons are present in the "box" that includes your clock down in the right hand corner of your task bar???...with this information someone can help you get to the bottom of this for sure! Just guessing.....you have too many programs running "resident" at start up for the resources you have OR you have installed a "memory HOG" type freebie download at some point.

The "Unknown Device" is almost certainly your sound card...plugged in and using resources but drivers not loaded!!...To straighten this out you will need to remove it in device manager and reinstall it ...including the drivers for it that came with the sound card.
