I can't seem to get this system to manually enter standby or sleep mode. By the way, are these the same things? If I use my keyboard sleep key the monitor will go dark and then after a few seconds come back on with a message " your computer can't go into standby because a program or device driver won't allow it " I've closed everything except systray and explorer and it still gives that message. I can set my monitor to go off but that's about it. I,m running an ASUS p3V4X with VIA PRO 133A chipset. I've installed the latest chipset drivers. In my BIOS I've enabled Power Management. What would cause this? Also, after trying to use sleep mode, I can not shut down normally. It just hangs.
Thanks for any suggestions.......

while Im waiting for GH to answer my delema.. I will try to help you ..
You are not by far the only one to have problems with the sleep standby feature.. I could point you to numerous web pages and articles that tell you why you should just disable that all together, but I won't waist my time or yours.
That function was really made for a laptop computer and is totally unecessary on any desktop pc.
I would disable it completely.
if you don't know how , post back and we will give instructions on how. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks, I was kinda thinging that anyway. It does seem pointless. If I'm not going to be using the system I'll just shut it down. It's good to know, in a way, that this isn't uncommon. I'm just one of those that think everything should work and try and get it to http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks

one further note... personally I keep mine set to "always on"
hard drive, monitor, everything.. there are two schools of thought on this.
Some say that you should shut down when pc is not in use.
Others (such as me) say that starting and stoping the Hard Drive... is potentially worse and is more wear and tear than just letting it run always.. with most Winblows OS, it really is a mute point cause they need to continually be re-started in order to get out of frozen screens and BSOD's...fortunately, I don't have this inherent problem on my win98se system.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
food for thought.......

Thanks Sea,
I just got so tired of trying to keep track of all my links, so......
Jdesan,
A similar problem is what brought me here in the first place, coming out of standy-by it would crash the open program (usually Explorer), never did figure it out.
There are some programs that poll info that will keep it from standy-by (Intel's processor tools - an add-on for system monitor, for one). And some keyboards that have a stand-by button won't allow you to disable just that button, you have to disable all the convienence buttons (my real problem was the stand-by button is my son's favorite button)

mjc: Been meaning to take a look for a few days, never really remembered until I'd already left here, always figured, well, I'll go ahead and see what's happening on the forums, then look...
Anyway, looks pretty good so far, nice layout. Check my site, feel free to steal any links you like, but route them directly, not through my site. That should make loading quicker, and I don't care about the number of "hits" I get...
In case you don't know already, right click on any link, click Properties and you can copy the URL to the clipboard. I either drop them in a notepad file for transfer later, or use a small and very useful utility called Cood Clip (http://www.aha.ru/~deep125/en/index.htm) which I've used for about 5 years, it lets you save 16 or more items in the clipboard. Then it's easy to paste them into a webpage editor. I also drop a button to it in my quick launch bar for easier access.
