hehe.... see Part 2 (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum15/HTML/000260.html), to catch the background on this....
I have recieved my new 30GB Hard Drive TODAY... I just spoke to Compaq yesterday afternoon!!!!!!!!!!!!
all it took was a very friendly 20 minute conversation with a very helpfull and knowledgeable tech support, and he walked me through fdisk, format, Quick Retsore, and came to the conclusion that the HD was fried.
here it is the next morning and that HD is here!!! (ups next day air).. and I didn't pay a cent shipping or otherwise.
of course, being as the pc isnt mine, wasn't under compaq warranty, or even purchased from compaq to begin with is just icing on the cake (so to speak) .. hehehe http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I've got 20-30 Compaq owners who would LOVE the name of the fellow that you got hold of @ Compaq http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ...thier results are a bit different.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif ...all I can say is this must be a new category for benchmark..lol
I was very lucky.. its a matter of who you connect with, and how you communicate.. again.. really lucky.. but I have also been very lucky when it comes to my one and only compaq purchase.. no problems at all.. save for the ones I created myself, and learned to fix http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
** note: to clarify, I did not misrepresent myself while speaking to this compaq rep. I gave my real name and the real product serial number of the machine I am working on.. my emphasis- on the fact that the pc isnt mine, under specific warranty, or purchased directly from- compaq- was mean to show compaq's willingness to resolve my problem regardless of all of that!!
hehe here's a pic: http://www.zing.com/picture/p7a93e2e059e44d730602a0b6b3a30be8/fec20ad4.jpg.orig.jpg
service doesn't get any better than this.
let the compaq flames begin..lol

Like you said Sea, it all depends who you talk to. It took my sister about 6 months to get hers fixed right, after a new MOBO (waited 6 weeks for that), a new video card and finally 3 months after all that a new PSU. No, I still won't buy one of their PCs, or any other off the shelf computer, anymore. I'll "roll my own" and if it gets screwed up I'll have nobody to blame but myself....I don't really hate Compaq, I just think that I could do without the headaches that along with them.

besides the obvious here, I would take this opp. to point out that without this forum, I would never have gotten as far as I did so fast.
I know a little now about this all as a result of all the help, and also trying to help others here on this board.
This is run tight, and has helped me more than I could begin to express.
Especially, thanks needs to go to many of the regulars here ( you know who you are) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
and of course our host Charles and Mod. Pete .. goes without saying (almost).. hehe
makes this an enjoyable as well as informative place to be.
