Just installed 98se full version, but for some reason it can not save the settings: for example desktop wallpaper, it disappears the next time I start the computer.
Almost 50% of the time I reboot the system it asks me to choose safe mode, because the system failed to load 98 on previous attempt. So I turned the computer off and than back on and the system boot in normal mode, but the system some times gives error for Explorer and the system crashes. Everytime I start the computer I have to reload some files for AOL.

Does all this sound like hardware problem, maybe the Hard Drive has a bad sector. The PC is 4 years old. Please help I never had all these problems with installing 98.

Before you installed your operating system did your format the drive? If not then more than likely your problems are a result of old problems in the registry. It is possible that your hard drive bit the dust (or is dieing) on the install as this is one of the more stressful activities for a hard drive. Also, is the HD that old as well? There are several other factors that could be wrong like a faulty power supply or loose connections on the motherboard. But a clean install is your best bet. After you install you should go the the MS site and get all updates to Win 98 SE. Are there any problems (yellow exclamation points) showing in the Device Manager?
Post back with more system info and any other oddities that you have noticed.

Edit: If you had Win 95 using FAT16 installed on the system before...you should run f/disk before the format to enable large disk support for FAT32 Win 98.
