If you recently re-installed Windows (clean install) then the modem drivers might not be installed. You FIRST have to have a working modem to get your fax software to work! To find out if you have a modem installed...go to My Computer/Control panel/ modems.....and click the icon...if there is a modem listed....go to diagnostics and test it....IF NO MODEM, or More than one is listed.......post back and we will carry the troubleshooting to the next step.

Thank you Randy
I went to diagnostics the computer shut off and instructed me
to touch any key. The error "the modem failed to respond. make sure it's connected prperly and turned on and to verify that the interrupt for port is properly set.
Port:
info-com 1
interrupt-4
How do I confirm that these are properly set?
jim
Right click on My Computer and go to device manager click on modem and then click on properties it will tell you if there is a problem.

When you reinstalled Win98 the modem PROBABLY was treated as an "Unknown" device.....you will find a "?" in Device Manager (get to device mgr. by going to My computer/Control Panel/System/Device Mgr. and look for ? question mark(s). If you find ?'s then "Remove" them so Win can re-find the device(s). Additionally, remove whatever modem you have under "Modems" as well. BEFORE YOU DO ALL OF THIS, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CD THAT CAME WITH YOUR MODEM WITH THE DRIVERS ON IT !! Now when you re-boot Win98 it will "Find" the modem....probably as a "PCI communication device" and that is when you have the Modem driver cd in your cd rom. You will probably have to "Browse" to find the exact drivers for your modem on the cd ...but if you persist, the drivers will finally load for you. Good luck! Post back the results. By the way....you MIGHT have to re-associate the newly installed modem with your Dial Up Connections and Fax program...esp. if Win98 assigns a new Com port or IRQ to the modem during this install from what it was before.
You should run the diagnostic test again after reinstall...If it doesnt respond this time.......you may have a DEAD modem...any lightning strikes around your place lately?

I need more information.......give the EXACT error message AND when you get it.......then one of us can figger out what's goin on there.....
I hope you mean you installed the modem from the modem drivers CD that came with the modem and you did it in Win 98.....which is what you originally posted as your operating system http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
