View Full Version : Monitor goes blank after booting from floppy

Here is my original post from a few weeks ago:

In order to replace the battery on my AT motherboard, I had to pull out the expansion cards (sound, modem, and video). After putting everything back together, the system goes past the point in the boot process when the monitor usually turns on, but the monitor remains blank. I checked the video card and firmly reseated it, but the problem remains. I am running Windows 98 SE and the computer and monitor were both working fine before replacing the battery. The video card is in a PCI slot, but it can't be put into another one because it is a long card and the processor blocks it.

Since then, I tried using a monitor that was working with another system. This one lit up and showed the usual startup screen.

I then entered setup and input the CMOS information I had saved before replacing the battery. After saving and exiting setup, a message came up "Primary Hard Disk Fail". Following the PC Guide suggestions for this message, I went back into setup to see if the hard drive could be autodetected, which it could. Then I booted from a floppy and from the A: prompt I tried to access the C drive, which produced the message, "Invalid Drive Specification". At this point, the monitor went blank and will show no signs of powering up like it had just a few minutes before.

Note: the monitor that goes with the system is an Energy-Star monitor that shows an amber light when turned on, but nothing after booting the computer.

thank you for your help

If you can get a picture, using the other monitor, type fdisk_/mbr using a space in place of the underscore ( _ ) used here, if that doesn't work, you'll have to repartition the hard drive, it's lost its partition information.

If one monitor works and the other doesn't, I'd say the one that won't work is bad.
