Well last night I tried to install Linux Mandrake 7.2 complete on my computer.

The installation started fine until i get to.

Do you have any SCSI cards

I click no and it asks me again.
This continues to repeat itself over and over

My question is do I need somthing else to do this install?
should I pull out all the cards except for the Video.
The manual does say to have everything on and installed durring installation.

This is an old system

Pentium 233mmx with 64 mb ram
3.2 gig wd Cavier drive
Matrox Millinium Video card (4 or 8Mb)
Soundblaster AWE 64 sound card
Cardinal 33.3bps modem
Motherboard I believe it a soyo 5eh? with a TX pro chipset

I know all the cards work because i did a Windows 98 install using another HD.

balzer, I wish I could help -- I'm an avid Linux user but I'm not familiar with the Mandrake 7 setup (Red Hat guy, and an older v.6 distribution). All I can say is this: Mandrake/Red Hat can be setup either using a graphical interface or a text-mode interface. You seem to be using the graphical one. I've read reports of problems with it, that were circumvented by setting-up with the text-mode interface. You'll need to read the docs to find out how to start the text-mode setup -- sorry I can't help there.

Thanks Sleddog,

I got the system running. Still need to workout some kinks. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

I seem unable to config the Modem which is a Cardinal Supra 33.6 PCI
or the sound card Sound Blaster AWE64 16bit wavetable ISA.

Will look on the Mandrake website to see if this hardware is on the supported list.

Still will keep on trying.

Not sure if this will help, but since Mandrake is suppose to be based after redhat it may. There is a program that will help to get the sound card set up called sndconfig. This program will let you pick a sound card and test it in the process to make sure it's working. Since you have a sound blaster there should be a very good chance to get that card running quickly with the program. Although, the program likes to be run in console mode, so you may have to edit you /etc/inittab to a run level of 3 on startup while configuring the sound card. There is a way of switching run levels with a command, but I'm afraid I can't remember it at the moment.

As for you modem, if it's a pci...then there is a good chance that it's a winmodem. If it has a lucent chipset on it, then you're in luck. These winmodem have been made to work with Linux and www.linmodems.org (http://www.linmodems.org) should have all the info to help you get it running.

Hope some of this was able to help you. Good Luck! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Also go to the modem manufacturer's website, it may have Linux drviers, more and more are getting them. A generic Linux driver may need some configuring but a little playing is worth it to get the modem running, right?

Do Vulcans even have to debug?

Thanks for the links and the help. Will have to try these ideas this weekend it may take some time to work out the kinks. But I wanted to play
around with Linux see what it can do.
