Hiya,
I followed your instructions to the letter, alas the problem persists.
I had a look at win98 setup info and found four error messages,as follows,
CDR100:unknown error
:not ready
:ems memory no longer valid
:cd rom not high sierra or ISO-9600 format.
It sounds serious to me, what do you reckon?
As for resetting the system I found and changed the "system.dat" file, infact I found six,But could not trace the"system.1st" file anywhere.
Is it time for a new base unit?.
Regards, Tom.

Ok lets look at your errors one at a time. ( please post your new information to this same thread. It makes it easier for me to keep track of what we've done. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif )
cd rom not high sierra or ISO-9600 format
MSCDEX does not recognize any other cd "format" such as CDRW. Real mode drivers will be limited to using only "normal" CDs.
ems memory no longer valid
Rebooting the system will get rid of this error.
CDR100:unknown error
This can be caused by CDs that are more than 70 mins long or by CD-ROMs made by NEC that are triple or quad-speed . CDROMs that don't comply with the REDBOOK spec for radial noise also will cause this error.
All of these errors are "real mode" errors generated by MSCDEX int24 calls.

If you don't have a system.1st you'll have to reinstall Windows to reset it back to "factory defaults". You don't need the system.1st file for Windows to operate, it's just a copy of the first register that the Windows installer built. You might want to try the method Pete mentioned in one of your other post to restore windows from the user.da0 and system.da0 files.
If your commited to reinstalling then make sure you have a backup of any data files that you want to keep. Then reformat the partition and reinstall Windows. But remember most of the errors your getting seem to point to a "bad" disk or drive not a Windows configuration problem. So the reinstall might fail using the same disk/CDROM.(I'm betting it's a bad disk. But if windows isn't working now I would reformat and then boot the computer from a Windows 98 boot disk which should start the install process.)
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I found some info on an error troubleshoot site that described the problem exactly,it says it was caused by upgrading from 95 to 98 when a program
called Hellix Hurricane is installed on 95,uninstalling the program will
solve it.I can`t find that program anywhere.
I decided to re-format the hard drive and,I am back to square one, the original windows protection message accompanied by the following,
"windows cannot complete loading,missing file,c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd"
I hope your not getting fed up with this lot.
Regards, Tom.

Hmmmmm.....Just to be sure I got it right. You reformatted and reinstalled Windows, but when you fire it up it gives you the "vmm32" error?

Yep,
Is that a problem or, just unusual?.

Hmmmmm....It's an unusual problem http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ( sorry I couldn't stop myself)
The VMM32 file is built when you install Windows and isn't a part of the CAB files found on the install disk.( so you can't extract it) The only recource you have is to try to reinstall again. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
But first look to see if that file can be found by typing "dir vmm32.vxd /s" at the C prompt. If you can find the file then move it to the Windows/system folder and reboot.
Also ,just to be safe, scan the hard drive for a virus. Then perform "scandisk /all /surface" from the C prompt before reinstalling.
Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
