Hiya,

My friend recently wrote this e-mail to me, as he seems to think I'm some sort of computer god (that's debatable... lol j/k) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif, and I'm stuck for a clue... any ideas anyone?

YO! My computer has been down for almost a week. Windows 2000 is not rebooting. The rebooting keeps looping(NON STOP). It starts up OK then when it is suposed to give me the log on screen it crashes with a blue screen message " ***STOP****(0x0000005...) etc... KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED....

Then it reboots again, crash and again, crash and again.

Please, I need help!

I told him thus:

Hey,

That's WHY I told you not to let ANYONE (but you, ofc) use your
administrative account... it sounds like someone changed some settings, or
you have a virus...

Don't know what to say other than that you seem to be screwed -- an entire
re-installation, etc. appears to be necessary.

What did you or anyone else DO, BEFORE this happened? Anything significant?

If not, and a friend was on it right before you or something, ASK THEM so
that I can get an idea of what might have occured.

Regardless, I'll ask around.

Later,

-Me

... ideas appreciated!

Thanx,

-shadowmonkx

Shadow, couldn't even begin to guess without more details. Hardware, software, what's changed recently, any clues as to what happened? Ask the guy or tell him to come here directly. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Sounds like he has it set to automatically reboot on fatal error.
This setting is listed under System Properties (right click on my computer, choose properties) on the Advanced Tab, under Startup and Recovery.
I'm not quite sure how to change this setting without being able to log in... There are a couple of options... when the computer is booting there is a part where you can press the spacebar to invoke the last good/known config. Try this first.
If that doesn't work he should try repairing his win2000 install with the installation disks or the Emergency Recovery Disk, which is usually made during the install.

Forget the part about the spacebar... that is a leftover from NT4 in my brain... In Windows 2000 you can use F8 pretty much like win9x, it has a safe mode and such like. Search for the stop message in the MS knowledgebase (http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp?FR=0&SA=GN&LNG=ENG)

I got this problem recently too. It sometimes crashed on blue screen. I think I got this problem after I install new memory from Crucial (mixed it with Kingston). So, I took it off and it seems everything working fine since then http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif It may be something about memory? I think I found the discussion about this under motherboard topic.

Will and Ged,

It's a bit late, y'see... he already fumbled with it and somehow succeeded (don't ask me how)!

Thanks anyhoo! ;-)

As for F8/Last Known Good Config, I knew about both, and even tried them b4 -- unfortunately for us users, Last Known Good Configuration does NOT work as well as M$ would have us believe... anyhow... *sigh*

Adios,
