After I built this system I f disked and reformatted a used hard drive WD 2 gig. I installed 98 and everything went smooth the first two or three times windows loaded. After I loaded drivers for the modem and restarted Windows locks at the windows 98 screen. I reloaded Windows and the same thing happened when I loaded the drivers for the sound card. Windows will run only in safe-mode and if I uninstall the drivers I loaded it still hangs.
System info: FIC VA503+MB new
128 meg pc133 new
4 meg video new
3d sound new
Used WD hard drive

How did you "remove" the drivers? Did you actually pull the modem and sound card out of system? If you didnt use Device Manager to "remove" the devices and then actually pull them out of the system you will still get the "Hang" - REASON for the hang is that the Video Card is wanting the same IRQ as either the sound card or modem (or the modem and sound card are trying to use same IRQ). RESOLUTION: The FIRST thing to try is to go into the "SETUP" or BIOS, if you will, and see if there is a way to run the video card WITHOUT it taking up an IRQ - The setting is usually found in Periperals section or Advanced Setup sect. If that is not available, then boot the system with the modem & sound card pulled OUT of computer and add one at a time to determine which card is causing the conflict. Then someone can take you from there to get it all working.

You can also try rearranging the cards into differnt slots. On some motherboards, the slots have preassigned IRQ numbers some of which may be shared which other slots. If the sound card wants to have IRQx and it is put into a slot that is assigned IRQy and shares IRQx with the next slot and the modem is in the next slot and wants IRQy but could use IRQx then you will get system hangs, but if the cards are switched around everything should be happy.

I removed both the sound card and modem and the system started I added the modem and it started normally but each time I install the sound card the system hangs I cannot find how to change the video card settings and I have moved the sound card to each of the three PCI ports and the system still continues to hang on start. More help please

You wont be able to change the Video Card IRQ; however, you might be able to run the Video card WITHOUT an IRQ if your motherboard's BIOS will allow it. Have you gone into the BIOS to see if you can NOT assign a IRQ to the video card?
