OK people, forgive my ignorance:

I'm running some game software (MAME) that requires a lot of juice, so before starting the program, I always go into the "close program" dialog box (Windows 98) and shut down everything running in the background except Explorer and sometimes the System Tray. This greatly improves performance of my application. However, there are 3 programs I am getting sick of constantly closing and would like to "shut off" altogether using msconfig., but I don't know what in the world they are and subsequently whether I need them as some part of Windows or not. Here's what they're called in the close program box:

1) Rnaapp
2) Atitask
3) Aticwd32

I can't figure out exactly what these are. Can anyone identify these names for me and tell me if it's safe to remove them from the start-up without affecting my overall system performance??

Thanks,
Allan

Go here for Rnapp: http://www.modemhelp.net/newsletter/dun/combatrnaapp.shtml

Go here for help finding out what Atitask and Aticwd32 are: http://isyte.gethits.net/thetech/tsr.htm

2 and 3 are installed by the ATI video card setup program. I've got one and have disabled both programs in Msconfig with no adverse effects. You do lose that tray icon that lets you make screen resolution changes easily, but you can get at it through Control Panel.

Thanks for the info. By the way, what tray icon are you talking about? I don't seem to have one. I assume by "tray" you mean the system tray in the lower right hand portion of the screen....what is the icon in question supposed to look like??

As I remember, it was the ATI logo in white on a red background. Clicking on it popped up a list of resolutions and color depths to select from. It seemed to be a luxury I could live without. I may have mis-spoken about which ATI program it was that activated it -- it's been a while since I disabled some things.
