Hope there is someone out there who can help me in simple language please, not too technical!

I am running Windows ME and decided to do a defrag. As this always comes up with the request to do a scandisk I tried this first - what a mistake that was as the PC totally locked up. One hour later I finally had to reboot but I now have the problem that my CD drives are not recognised. Have tried looking through the PC Guide on line but cannot find an answer. Tried using the install new hardware program but this doesn't find the drives for me. Both CD drives have power (lights are on) but one has the tray extended and won't go in or out, the other tray works fine. Both drives worked fine before the scandisk operation. Have emailed Microsoft but don't hold out much hope of any help from them and my computer supplier went bankrupt last month!! Really stuck on this so would appreciate any help at all.

I'm thinking scanreg /restore but we will wait to see what others say.

(but thats what I would do.. besides replace ME with Win98se)

**oh and after we get you fixed up, in the future shut down everything except explorer and system tray, before you attempt scandisk or defragg**

It is VERY important to run BOTH weekly ( then you wont have so much trouble either and it wont take so long)

For a long term solution I would consider installing Win98 Second Edition on your computer. Since you dont have a supplier to go back to any more, you will be able to get a LOT more help with Win98 SE (a more stable MS product) than Me (which has a LOT of problems still). Just a thought.

Thanks for the advice. Had already decided ME was no good (did you know that if you email Microsoft and tell them they stink you get an instant reply?) but with both CD drives out of action I think my only option may be to go to a local technician. Restore hangs up so can't do that and I don't know what "scanreg" means - I really am a beginner when it comes to solving Windows problems - come back DOS!

Hope this gets back to the discussion forum as I can't quite figure out how to send it.

Have now got one CD drive working (the other one shows up and has power but does not work as yet) so now hope to solve the rest of the problem. I haven't got WIN98 and it doesn't seem to be available in New Zealand any more (I think Microsoft have had a big push on ME). Searched the internet but can't find a supplier for NZ.

The technician who fixed my drive problem thought it may be a boot virus but I have used the latest virus scanning software and nothing shows up. If I uninstall everything will I be able to reinstall ME or will my PC crash completely? I think I may have done something really dumb at one stage and tried deleting without uninstalling something which I didn't want and which just installed with another program. I have learned a lot since then but not enough to solve this.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
