View Full Version : Modem detected and installed but not working
I installed a cheap modem in winme and it detects it and installs it but when i go to new conettion it acts like i have no modem. on the box if say pci version for windows 95,98. Is that the problem. It is not made for me. If so where can i get the drive that will make it work for winme.
Go to the maufacturers website and look in the support section and see if there are updated drivers for ME. If there are download them (they should fit onto a floppy) and follow the instructions (usually included or use the original instructions that came with the modem), just make sure that you unzip (they are usually in a compressed format and you need to unpack them with a software tool like Winzip (http://www.winzip.com/ ) or PowerArchiver (http://www.powerarchiver.com/ )). If they don't have an update for ME then you may have to buy another modem. I would recommend an external or an internal hardware (a modem where all functions are performed by circuitry on the modem itself and not by the computer).

Rather than edit mjc's post I thought I'd repost the links, and see if I can get them to work. Don't know what mjc missed, but something went haywire...
Power Archiver (http://www.powerarchiver.com/) (had an extra space in this one, right after com/)
WinZip (http://www.winzip.com/) (Same here, extra space after the URL)
Maybe these will work...mjc you asleep at the wheel? You don't usually do that kind of stuff... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

If downloading a driver doesn't work, try installing the modem manually rather than letting windoze do it. I had the same problem with my install of ME but it's ok now.(touch wood)

Sea: Thanks, I saw and fixed my bad link, but didn't make the connection, I never realized it might have been related to the forums. It's done that before too, for no apparent reason...
I usually go on to the next post and thought it was my fault, since I rarely let the page load and check the links. Sorry MJC...

I know, it happens to me sometimes too. I know I posted a link right, I type most of them in and recheck them, and for some reason it shows up as a bad link. I edit and find the "Note:[/b] Please post your questions on the forums, not in my email.
[url="http://www.geocities.com/paleopete/"]Computer Information Links ( and the url is there twice. Don't know what it is, and it's not often enough to be a definite bug...
Anyway, just thought I'd let you know what happened, so you'd know what to look for later if it happens again. I have a bad habit of clicking into the next post without waiting for the page to load and checking it. Usually I never know about a bad link till the next day.

check your modem settings in control panel and your irq settings in device manager. i've bought hardware lately that requires installing the software BEFORE you install the hardware, as well (usually 3com network cards).
you could also try moving it to another PCI slot.
