Tell me about Linux.....

I know practically nothing about Linux, could someone who uses it please tell me how it compares w/ the other OS's? Also, is it text-based, like DOS, or a GUI? I also heard there was somewhere you could download it for free. Is this true??

You can download here -- ftp://rufus.w3.org/linux/ -- and elsewhere but you need a fast connection and need to know what you're doing. Read first. Then read some more.

You'll need a cdburner to actually make your installation cd and like sleddog said, you need a fast connection...mandrake 7.2 is over a gig if you d/l both cds...

A dual boot with whatever you're currently running is also advisable unless you have a system you can afford to have partly or completely non-operational while you figure everything out...

As far as the d/l sites, there are some great ftps in germany...I got mandrake 7.2 (both cds) in around 40 minutes...
