Hi
This is my first time using this forum and any reponse would be appreciated.
Just a question about a Win98se install I did yesterday.
A friend of mine wanted me to reinstall win98se on his system
because he was having problems. I proceeded to install it and it went through the install process with no problems.
After the first reboot after all the drivers were installed(all
drivers were updated so we had them during the reinstall) the system became very unstable.
We even reinstalled back to the older versions of drivers but got the same problem.
Thinking it was a bad install we reinstall to get the same. This time we didn't install the new drivers.

After trying to figured it out for a few hours I decided to try my win98se
cd. It worked without a hitch.
Have you heard of win98se cd being bad when they haven't even been use?
Also this was still in the package it came in new because he hasn't used it.
The cd doesn't show any signs of being damage.

Welcome, Hockeye! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif If it's a legally-purchased copy, not a hand-me-down already registered in
someone else's name, I'd think MS would like to see it. Call them and ask if they will replace it.
If it's an OEM, academic, or 'gray market' version, he's probably SOL unless the seller will replace it.

It's the cd he got with his computer when he bought it. That is certainly a possibility. I just hope it isn't for his sake.
I know I have installed it many many times and never had the problems I had with it.
If it is its a concincing copy it looks identical to mine. Is there a way to tell if it is?

If it's a true Microsft CD it will have the Windows logo and all the trademarks on it.
I suppose that can be faked. There should also have been a booklet that came with it,
and it should have a Microsoft hologram sticker and the product ID number.
If this CD is from the system vendor like Compaq or HP, it's only meant
to be used to restore that model computer. If it's defective, the vendor should replace it.
