Just loaded up 2000 pro and for a few hours all was well. dropped in a Santa Cruz sound card with Beta W2K drivers, MS Word 97' and Calendar from the same MSWorks 99' disk and now I have a few problems to say the least!
#1 is that my CD-ROM will not recognize a data disk when inserted but it does when I start the computer with the disk already in the drive. I also don't have the problem after I start up in this fashion, meaning that the CD-R drive works normally after I start it with a disk inside. What's wrong, Could it be something in the BIOS settins?? Thanks for any advise...

Windows 2000 has a problem detecting some CD-Rs at startup. This can be caused by a CD that is incompatible with 2000, or with out of date firmware(check the "cd" web site for updated firmware). But because it can see the drive if you have a cd inside it. I would expect the problem to be timing.( the CD-R is already spinning or "up" when 2000's GUI goes thur it's detection of IDE devices. If the CD-R isn't spinning when the GUI starts it fails to detect it because the CD-R is too slow to respond.)

I would check first for a fimware update for the CD-R then check the Windows 2000 hardware compatiblity list to see if your CD-R is listed as one that will work with 2000. I would also download and install service pack 1 for Windows 2000.
