I've recently installed Linux and I have a few questions that are relatively unrelated. The version I'm using is RedHat 5.2 (from the Linux for Dummies book I have!)

In X Windows, I can find the start menu (which took two days to figure out!), but even logged in as root, I can't seem to access the Control Panel. Whenever I click on it, nothing happens.

Also in X Windows, when I set the background (and cursors) and try to save the desktop settings, it doesn't work.

How (without going into detail!) can I find out how to configure my sound card (an Awe 64)?

If I decide to go out and buy Mandrake 8, will I have to re-install over this distribution, or format my partitions and then do that (not a big deal, but I'm curious).

Finally, (and I've asked this in a previous topic, but this can't hurt), it Win95, whenever I empty the recycle bin, I get a prompt asking if I want to format my D drive, the partition when Linux is currently hiding.

Not to blow off your questions, but I think you'll have much better luck w/Linux if you go with the most up to date version...support for your devices will be much improved...and it will be much more intuitive to use if you go with Mandrake...

I don't know what kind of internet connection you have, but if it's fast (cable/dsl or better) and you have a cd burner, you can download Linux for free, and legally, at www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) and then burn the cds yourself...

There should be a linuxconf program that will have sections for what you're looking to do in the meantime...

When/if you go with a newer version, you shouldn't have to format the drive, it should ask you if you're upgrading and perform the necessary tasks...

When all else fails, read the instructions.

I just finished installing RedHat 7.1 ( $30) Includes Online support for 30 days.
The install program has an UPGrade option .
I found it easier to do a clean install. ( same as with windows)

To get the aw64 working under RH5.2 you need to find and install the sound drivers.

I can't tell you how to stop Win95 from checking your Drives when you empty the Recycle bin.
I can tell you that win98se can see the Linux drive as a NonDos partition and doesn't ask to format it.

One small hangup I found in RH7.1.
It found my ISA PnP modem as a Com port and as a Modem. Installed both .
And listed it as a conflict .
No Big deal I just reset the modem to Com2 ( legacy setting) and did away with the conflict

if you are unable to make changes as root . You need to check and adjust the privileges/ permission settings for that access
