You are in Ms-DOS compatability mode did you update or add any new software recently? Try going into BIOS setup (F1) when the HP screen comes up at boot and set the drives to auto (first page about in the middle). Then check for device conflicts in Device manager.

The two most common reasons Win 98 SE will go into Dos compatibility mode is if you changed motherboards (different chipsets) or you have a cmos virus. If you didnt change motherboards lately, run a Virus detection program on your computer asap.

If my hard drive is very fragmented, will it switch to msdos compatability mode?
Is your CD rom drive recognized in by Windows?
Which model Pavilion do you have?

No.....a fragmented hard drive will not cause it to "go into" Dos compatibility mode. The IDE (Hard Disk) Controller Drivers becoming corrupt and Win "Falling back" to Standard Drivers will cause this problem. Here is another thing to try: Close all running programs and Go to Control Panel/System/Device Manger and then to Hard Disk Controllers (look to see if there are any "!" marks)...if there are none, remove the Main controller...you might have to then exit using F4 key to close programs and to reach the shut down screen. Shut down and reboot and let windows refind your HD controller......that might do it.

Troubleshooting MS DOS Compatibility Mode (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q130/1/79.asp) might help.
