Upon booting RH Linux 7.1, I encountered a problem. Two files are sharing blocks. They are /var/log/XFree86.0:log and (I think) /var/g??/0.log...something. The point is that upon boot I was dropped to a
Read only shell. I can't do anything that will change the files (at least
with what I know). Does anyone know how to fix this problem. Unfortunately , I just installed it and I have no backup files. Any suggestions? Thanks
Brian

I just installed RH 7.1 myself, so I don't know the technical stuff yet, but can't you just boot off your installation CD or boot floppy, reinstall, and then during installation re-format your disk? If you just installed the software, you shouldn't have anything on the drive to lose yet, right? But you might want to wait for someone more knowledgeable who can suggest a better fix.

If you decide to reinstall .
I would suggest that you allow the partitions and drive format to redo the complete drive starting from zero.(Use advanced and remove all the Partitions)
Also Allow it to do the write test (Surface Test).
If your getting Cross linked files ( Sharing Blocks ?) These could be a sign that your drive had bad spots and they were missed during the format, ( Not Marked Bad In FAT)
If you do in fact have a bad sector or sectors on that drive they Will come back to haunt you in the future with more cross linked files and more errors.
If it's a hardware problem its far better to solve it now.
Before you invest the time setting up the system to your liking.

Thanks,
Yeah, I eventually ended up reinstalling. I did have it mark the bad blocks originally, so I 'm not sure where the problem came from. Thanks again...brianZ
