Is anyone familiar with a Windows 98SE Peer to Peer Network having problems "seeing" shared resources on the attached computers. I have four computers connected to a Ethernet hub and I have the same problem on all four machines. I basically have every hard drive shared, several CD-RW's and a few printers. Clicking on Network Neigborhood will usually only bring up the system I am actually using right then. The funny thing is, if I use Find and search for another computer I can find it, open files on it and such, but it will still not show up in Network Neighborhood. This is a problem!! I would really appreciate any info or workarounds anybody might have on this. Thanks.

I can fix that, but I'm gonna need some duct tape, an old car battery and a butter knife.

The fastest fix is to install NetBUEI if you havn't already.

I installed NetBEUI, but it didn't change anything. I'm not sure why the network will let me search for a computer, find it and view the shared resources, but will not show up in Network Neighborhood. It's causing problems sharing and mapping drives. Does anybody have any further suggestions of help on this??

Do you have NetBEUI as the default protocol on all of your nics? Do you have all of the drives shared as "full"? Since in sounds like you added NetBEUI after you already had your network up, what were you using previously? Do all of your PC's have the same workgroup listed under network ID?

First off I apologise for the lack of proper terminology but I will do my best to explain.

I had two Win Me computers networked, all the protocols, IP etc were correct and I had exactly the same signs as yourself where you could search and find a computer but not see it displayed in "My Network Places".

1. Computer No1 had the "folders view" in such a way that there was a left panel on the opened window (e.g same as when you highlight a jpg you get a thunbnail appear in it), I clicked on the "my work group" icon (e.g skhips_home)I selected view all (or something to that effect) in this panel on the left and I could then see everything correctly.

2. Computer No2 did not have the window set up the same so there was no left panel. I can ping, search and find, play games etc but cannot display the network computers.

Try an make it clearer.

1. Click "My Network places".
2. Click "Entire Network".
3. Click "your own workgroup name" (both computers must be members of the same workgroup).
4. The Window should now open to display the network computers and shared resources. This is where on computer 1 I could select View all in the left panel, but had no panel in computer 2 to do this.

I know its only a setting somewhere to set the folder view the same but for the life of me I cant find it.

Netbuei should always work as long as the computers are in the same workgroup and have different computer names.
Net 'hood does sometimes take time to update. So try waiting 15 mins.

Also make sure that one computer on your network is a browse master. To do so follow these steps on one computer:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Network, click "File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks"
on the Configuration tab, and then click Properties.

3. In the Property box, click Browse Master, click Enabled in the Value box,
click OK, and then click OK.

4. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

Note that if that computer is not runnning then your browse list will not be avaiable. The browse master creates and sends out the browse list which is what you see in net 'hood. You can set all the computers to be browse masters that way they will vote on which one it should be. This will slow down your bootup times a little but there will always be a master up and running.
