If you have 4 simms modules (ie two pairs) in a computer and one pair is bad...will the puter still post up? Seems it would post to the amt of good RAM only...but I cant remember!! I'm certain that if one module of the pair is bad in both sets.....it WONT post...but what about one good pair?

Hey Randy,

Seems to me that any bad memory chip would cause errors, whether or not it's paired with another bad one or a good one.

Additionally, if in fact the system would recognize the amount of good memory, it would have to be in the memory bank that the system reads first.

Cheers,

I think BB66 is right, if the system does recognize the good memory it would have to be in the first block.

Thanks boys........makes perfect sense to me....I'll start a pullin ram out right now...tell ya later what it was (heck, it could be the mobo, cpu or both) ...the system is ancient.

It was the mobo & cpu that were gone! It's regretful we dont have a diagnostic machine like they have for cars that you just "plug in" and it tells you as much or more than you want to know!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

OK.....to be truthful...I dont know if it's the cpu or mobo or both. It is so old that the cost to replace either is greater than the system is worth....so it doesnt pay (for the customer) for me to try to find another P-120(or chip that mobo will stand) to find out. It's new CPU time for them as far as I'm concerned....we'll move the data over to the new one.

Send the CPU over, I have a board that will check it...up to 133 non MMX and no CPU for it right now, but that's on the back burner anyway. No I don't want your customer's CPU...board is a known good one, CPU that was in it was a 233MMX and never worked right...wonder why??? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I went ahead & pulled the cpu fan off to verify what the customer "Said" the cpu was.........What did I find? ....IT WAS A AMD K6-200 !...a NON MMX chip that runs @ 66mhz with 3 multiplier and @ 3.2 volts (a warm little guy). If the customer gives it to me (currently deciding on a new box from me) you are welcome to it Pete http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ...as long as I dont have a mobo in the scrap pile that it will fit into (assuming it works).

No thanks, don't want it. Not an AMD kinda guy, and the motherboard I do need one for supports no faster than 133MHz, Intel only, non-MMX. Sure wish it would handle Cyrix, I have a 6x86 133 running at 110MHz right here that would be perfect for it...
