Thanks pjungwirth and Rick for your information on which distribution to install. I took your advise and went with installing Linux Redhat 7.1 on the weekend, installation went smoothly. I inputed the correct details for my mouse (it's a serial Microsoft Intellimouse connected to com1).

However the mouse will not work. What do I to get it working?

I tried reinstalling with just the generic 2 button mouse but it still did not work.

I have zero knowledge about Linux or the KDE enviroment. I don't even know the keyboard short cut for logging out (Computer is still running with screensaver).

My mouse does actually work, as I've got Win98SE on the pc as well.

Zareous,

I don't know anything about KDE, as I've only used Gnome, but here are some thoughts/questions.

Did your mouse work during the Red Hat installation?

Do you see any errors during boot up? (You can check the boot record in /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/boot.log.)

If you press Ctrl-Alt-1, you can get a plain text login prompt. If you move the mouse, you should see a white square as your mouse cursor. Does that work? (You can use this login to shut off the computer, btw. Just type "shutdown -h now." You can also type "shutdown -r now" to restart.)

I've had this problem on occasion with my RH 7.1 installs. My solution was to move to a cli, Ctrl+Alt+F1-6, the do the following after logging on as root:

mv /etc/sysconfig/mouse /etc/sysconfig/mouse.bak

now, type:

setup

here, reconfigure the mouse again. Select the MS Intellimouse on COM1 like before and it should work. I think what happens is the file in some way becomes corrupted. Not sure exactly how. I've examined it and it appears to be correct, but a space someplace could be what's causing the problem. ANyway, that's what I did to fix my mouse. Hope it helps.
