A friend of mine called and asked if he could use my win98 disc to reinstall windows, as something happened to his computer, he doesn't know what exactly. It was acting up, getting error message (mmido, performed illegal operation), and he was having a hard time shutting it down. The other day, he tried rebooting, and it came up with couldn't find himem file. Now I know that is a system file. What do you think could have happened. Could I just copy the file, and place it in windows system? Or try to boot from the start up in safe mode. He doesn't have a start up disk.

Alrighty then go to www.google.com (http://www.google.com) search type Himem file the reference number is ch000425 it's kind of long but interesting are you getting a EMM 386 error? if that does not help post on back ok . http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Also check that Device Mgr. for any conflicts.

Thanks for the info Yoda, much appreciated. From what I understand, either the file is indeed corrupted, or else the memory or motherboard needs to be replaced. Am I right. I have a start up disk, which I will bring over. My question is, how to actually boot up from the disk. I put the disc in before booting up, and it will open automatically right. Once I am in, what exactly do I do? I guess the idea is to boot up from the floppy and if it works, then the himem file is corrupt and I can copy it from there. Right?
