Hi Folks,

I'm new to the forum, the PCGuide has really helped me a lot, but now I don't know what to do.

On a 1997 MB I started with COM1 & COM2 default resource settings, mouse on COM1 through the DB-9 connector, and a DB-25 on the rear of the case also for COM2 and the antique serial printer (not used every day). That's all the hardware COM ports on the MB.

Then added the Etech PCI56RVP modem to a PCI slot, installed its virtual modem software and has worked OK for the last year. However I did have to disable the BIOS PnP OS setting, so AFAIK my MB is acting like a legacy one. W95 had no problem adding COM3 as it installed the Etech then. There is no conflict between the mouse on COM1 & virtual modem on COM3, since COM3 still has its own default IOaddress (which is naturally different than COM1's) but used IRQ11 beautifully.

Now I added an early Zoom Comstar 14.4 modem into an ISA slot as a second modem, previously tested this modem is fine in W3.11 on a true legacy MB. This is AKA Zoom model 610 PnP, has no jumpers to disable PnP or select IRQ. This exact Zoom modem is not on the W95b CDROM list, W95 found it as *144/spk* so I canceled that window before it could complete the generic install. Then to Add Hardware and selected Zoom & Have Disk, directed W95 to the HDD location where I have the exact INF files for this modem, then I probably should have chosen the plain *Model 610* moniker from the list but I picked *Model 610 (PnP)*. There were a few other older & newer of their models of similar vintage to choose from with this manufacturer's install file, and lots seemed to have both a PnP and plain version. Now I find out all of the model #'s shown are Zoom PnP hardware modems, and corresponding non-PnP versions did never exist, so I guess the non-PnP choices were there for a reason when you need them with the PnP unit :-\
This is the current updated W95 install file downloadable from Zoom today.

It did seem to install OK, however in Device Manager it ended up there as *610 (PnP)* but had no COM port :-(
Then I went to Add Hardware and added a COM port, showed up as COM4 all right but not related to the modem.
Then removed the modem, but now it automatically installs on re-boot as *610 PnP* and never does have anything to do with COM4, which is where I want it.

I just need to be able to start over with COM4 already present, then get W95 NOT to automatically recognize the Zoom as model 610, so I can cancel the install window on boot-up, then this time use the modem install icon instead of the hardware one, I think this will allow me to associate the modem with COM4.

I have tried to remove the Zoom then reinstall it with the modem icon, then I get the choice for non PnP as well as COM4, but then on reboot it still finds a duplicate modem automatically, it shows two of the same modems, one on COM4 & one with no com, neither can be accessed. In other configurations with this same MB I've had other devices on COM4 at the same time as COM2 without conflict since I wasn't using both devices at once, they still had different IOaddresses but shared the same default IRQ just fine. The printer on COM2 is unplugged from the MB right now anyway.

What I think might help is a complete manual uninstall technique for not just the registry (which I'm not very well versed in) but also some other areas I know nothing about so far.

I would just like to be able to start over (whine) without having to reinstall W95, or if there is a way to reinstall W95 without losing any of my settings except for the Zoom and COM4 maybe that would be the right way.

If anyone can help this may be a fairly common problem, I'm just starting out on this kind of thing and it's really frustrating.

Thanks,
Mike

Have you tried to remove it in Safe Mode?

Also if you pull the modem out, remove the files in safe mode and then reinstall it is should act as if it were never installed

Thanks mjc, that did really help, but my problems were not over yet . . . I thought I would add more details about what it took.

Found a bulletin in the Microsoft KB about this exact modem, plus W95 in general both having a problem with COM4.
There was also another bulletin with an example script on how to disable PnP from a com port probably for a purpose like mine, didn't quite want to go there at that point . . .

Changed my MB hardware COM2 port (used for the serial printer) over to COM4 instead in BIOS, but still couldn't get the modem on to my now available COM2 http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
I got pretty familiar with Safe Mode trying though http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Then found a download from the Zoom site called PORTWIZ1 that was intended for other vintage models of these modems, is contains PORTWIZ which runs from the command prompt before W95 takes over, that finds an available IRQ and edits AUTOEXEC.BAT to set the modem after also using the included SETPORT command where you select which com port you want to use. There was no provision to use the default IRQ's for com ports though, the software was too *advanced*, it always looked for higher IRQ's. Well, edited that software so that it just plain sets the Zoom modem for the default settings of COM2, now the PnP function is not active and when I install the modem with Add Modem, I can choose the COM2 just fine.

The whole idea is to use the caller ID function that is supposed to be in these Zoom modems, still haven't been able to get caller ID to work yet, I hope the Zoom people get back to me . . .
I want to use this just for a telephone answering modem on the incoming phone line, while still going on-line with the 56K PCI modem on the other phone line.

Thanks for the useful help,
Mike

You may have to manually enter the Caller ID init string, it should be in the manual...and you may be abel to find the manual either at the Zoom site or try Google (http://www.google.com).
