I am getting the following message during boot-up on a Win2K Pro machine:
"a disk read error occurred".
After many ctrl+alt+del the pc will then boot, apparently normally.
Does this sound like boot sector error, a possible virus, or a physical problem with the disk?
Thanks.
Tony.

sounds like the CMOS settings on the hard disk are not correct. this is out of my league But hang in there there are plenty of pro's that can talk you thru this.Sorry i'm not much help on this one.

I agree with Yoda74....Did you just install Win2k? If you did I would start over, but first check that your BIOS is set to "autodetect".

Does this sound like boot sector error, a possible virus, or a physical problem with the disk? Could be any one of those reasons, use the emergency repair option to fix the boot sector, a virus scanner like fprot should help with any virus problem and scandisk may help with a bad disk.

Also did you install any new hardware like a CD-rom or other harddrive?

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks guys. Will let you know how I get on.
Palm PDA software has recently been installed but no other new stuff as far as I know. Win2K was installed as an upgrade to 95, not as a clean install.

Here's the Microsoft look-see that seems to address your issue. Yoda and Ghost appear to be on the right track! Microsoft Q222996

Oops, there might be other issues involved. If you do a Microsoft search on Win2K be sure to spell OCCURRED correctly or only one option will show up. About 13 possibilities when spelled correctly.

May all your dealings in life be win/win!

The knowledge base article says:
Select the correct CMOS setting for the drive before partitioning and formatting the drive and installing Windows.
But as Windows is already installed this doesn't sound like much of a solution! Can I change the CMOS settings safely with Win2K already on there?
Thanks.
Tony.

Well it won't hurt anything to try. But you may end up having to reinstall.
