View Full Version : Slowdown browsing folders in Win98SE

One of my users has recently started having trouble with his laptop. When he's browsing through his folders, whether via My Computer or Windows Explorer, they are very slow to open. (About 10 seconds at worst.) The further down he goes, the slower they are. The hard disk light blinks when he first clicks on them, stays out for a while, then blinks once more when they finally open. Everything else is fine - his apps start without undue delay, and if he opens his documents from within them they come up at once.
He's defragged the PC but it made no difference. The only change he's made lately is the installation of his Palm software.

Hi Ruana,
I'm not sure, but I think this could either be low system memory or low system resources.
The fact that the HD light isn't flashing constantly makes me think it isn,t a swap file thrashing problem. Slow opening folders makes me think it is a System Resources problem. I could be wrong though!
I would firstly ask your user to check how many programs are loaded on start-up and perhaps disable all that are not required.
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Also check for MS-DOS Compatability MOde under the Perfomance tab in Device Manager.

mjc, do you mean the System Properties? There's no 'Performance' anything in Device Manager, and I can't find MS-DOS Compatibility Mode under the Performance tab in Properties.
