computer: pentium 133Mhz, 32MB's RAM
events:
sucesfully- fdisked, reformated-partitioned HDD.
When trying to run setup from D: get bad command.
also- "cannot open MSCD001", DEVICE NOT FOUND (BUT IS THERE)
"No valid CDROM device drivers."
CD drive is: Goldstar GCD-540C
went and got DOS drivers for it to install, have them on a floopy; when going to install, computer "balks" and says that I am trying to install to the wrong windows directory.
There is no windows directory yet, as I haven't installed the OS, because I cannot get the CDROM to read.
when installing this device driver, what windows path directory does one want ??

Hey Sea,
Seems to me a startup disk with CD-ROM support would be the best way to go. It has generic ROM drivers that usually will allow access to the CD.
However, if you don't have one of those, (which I find hard to believe) then you must use a DOS boot disk with the autoexec.bat and config.sys files modified to allow loading of the ROM drivers. You must also have the ROM drivers copied to a drive and directory that matches the one that the startup files are looking for.
Try this first: When it tells you it can't find the directory, or wrong directory, then you will have to boot to a DOS prompt and at the C:\ prompt, type "md windows", without the quotes. That will create the Windows directory and then try installing again. If that doesn't work, then we'll have to figure out how to modify your startup files to find and install the drivers.
Good luck.
Will check back later.

Thanks BB, for the FAST reply!
certainly I have (and used) the win98 bootdisk, with cdrom support. (option 1)
when in DOS after booting to win98 bootdisk, (it doesn't load mscdex) for some reason.
I continue by taking the bootdisk out, and putting in the floppy with the "540cexe" (self extracting cdrom drivers for this), it doesn't like the directory "C:/windows"
probably because it isn't there......... me thinks I'm a bit s >l>o>w> today.

Sea,
I know I'm in way over my head on this one. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif My guess would be that perhaps the BIOS is not picking up on it. Since it says "device not found." Could not find anything on the Goldstar as far as it's age.
Just a thought http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
Sea, in this error message is it refering to the "Device" as the hardware or the software?
May all your dealings in life be win/win!

I would have thought that as well, but when it posts, says: ' hard drive found, cdrom drive found, keyboard found', floppy drive a found..... Then proceeds to say that it isn't going to load cdrom drivers because device isn't found. MSCDEX aborted.

edit: going to do what BB suggested.. create the directory.. but wonder why this is different from all the other pc's I have installed OS's on. It had win98 on it just a couple hours ago...

I'm certainly no expert, but I had a similiar problem a few weeks ago with a Gateway 2000. It wouldn't recognize the CDROM, so I downloaded the drivers in Dos for that CDROM using a different PC and installed them first. Then it seemed to work fine booting from the CDROM to install Windows. Maybe your CDROM doesn't work with the generic drivers that come with the Windows program. Just a thought.
I'm sorry, I just re-read your original post and saw that you have already tried to install the Dos drivers. My mistake. Forgive my ignorance.

Here's what happens when I boot this machine to win98boot disk:
It 1st finds the HDD, CDROM, keyboard and A drive.
then continues to .... "This ... provided by OAK Technology, OTI-91X ATAPI CD-ROM device driver... bla.. bla..
Device name: MSCD001
No Drives Found, aborting installation".....>> then loads, Adaptec ASPI Manager for DOS, and completes PCI bus scan..>>
then>> - Microshaft RAMDrive virtual disk D:- loads>> preparing to start your computer.. bla..bla..>>
Device Driver not found: 'MSCD001'
No valid CDROM device drivers selected.

that's where I am.

Hi Sea, I may be on the wrong path here, but I have had similar problems with my 95 box. With the 95 bootdisk I have had to actualy copy the MSCDEX to C:. My most recent shot at it was with a 98 bootdisk. I had a problem with "Invalid drive selection" when looking for D:. I tried Fdisk and formatt one more time and noticed that 98 bootdisk setup the CD-ROM as R:.
Setup 95 from R: and all was back to normal after install, (A: floppy, C: HDD, D: CD-ROM)
Hope this helps

Sea,
Check the autoexec.bat and config.sys files for command lines for the CD-ROM. I'm thinking you have to edit those files to signify that the CD-ROM drive letter is E:, since the RAMDRIVE is called the D: drive. You will of course have to have a DOS disk with the EDIT.exe file on it. Copy that file to the C:\ drive. Then, at the C:\ prompt, type:
edit a:\autoexec.bat or edit a:\config.sys
Better yet, post back the autoexec.bat and config.sys files here. I have had vast experience in getting a ROM to work with no OS or DOS installed, using just a boot disk and making sure the startup files reference the correct drive letter for the ROM and that they are looking for the driver in the correct place. There is a way to do it, so let's see what those files look like.
One more thing, in order for the DOS driver install disk to work properly, you have to copy the MSCDOO1 file to the Windows directory on the harddrive. Make sure that autoexec.bat and config.sys files are looking for it at C:\Windows.
Give that a shot and let us know.

And I missed out on all the fun... from what I read I was wondering if it might be a Panasonic interface, run from the sound card. Many of the older ones were. No matter what you do a win98 start up disk chokes on them.
Anyway, glad you got it running...guess it was just a bad drive...

actually it orginally was. (plugged into the soundcard)
I detached it for installation and have since rehooked it up, and everything seems to be working ok.
Now I am about to add another 64MB's RAM.
(I hope)
