I was on my computer transferring files (jpegs) from my slave to my master drive when the slave drive just shut off. This of course left a file half transferred.

When I rebooted my system WinXP ran a Disk Testing program that showed a jpg was split between 2 disks. After the testing program shows the error though all it does is hang.

I can get around this problem if I skip the Testing and just startup but I was wondering if anyone knew how I might solve this problem. I would hate to have to go through this testing program every time I turn on my PC.

Thanx,

MangMang

In many ways MangMang you are ahead of a bunch of us here...haven't touched XP yet, but you may have to get rid of that jpg first either move both parts to one disk or delete it completely....not really sure how to go about it either...can you see the pieces in explorer (if that is what XP calls it)?

Thanx for the reply, and "yes" WinXP still refers to it's folder viewer as "explorer."

The odd thing is that the JPEG which XP says is split really isn't. I viewed the file and it's whole. I've been trying to find a option to turn this disk checker off but have been so far unsuccesful.

I'll keep trying though and will update the group on my adventures.

Also, I forgot to mention that over the weekend I went to a Computer show here in Toronto, Canada and bought a 40GB HDD to replace the one that "died" on me. Even after replacing the drive which supposedly has half of the file still in it I still get the same error. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Sounds to me that it is possibly one of the new "protection" features, to save us from ourselves, going nuts...

I'm kind of out of ideas....other than the dreaded r&r....all over a "stuck file", have you tried clearing all the MRUs you can find?

HORRAH!!!

I just figured out how to solve this little problem. Apparently the files I was attempting to transfer kept a record in the C:/Documents & Settings/Recent Files Folder. The error was coming up because the source for the record was split. So I deleted the recent file records (or one could also turn off "store recent files") and voila no more disk checking. Well actually XP checked it one more time and stated that it had to truncate the files because they were out of sequence.

(mjc) Most Recently Used oh okay, so that's what you meant. hehe, thanx.

if i knew what that meant i wouldn't have had to spend all that time trying to unsplit the file and just delete the recent documents.

im such a dork.

thanx again,
