hello,
i have a j-656c pentium pci mainboard with the intel fx chipset in it. i have a pentium 100 processor, and 16 meg ram. i am building this system and when i got it done, i hit the power supply, fan comes on, processor heats up, but will not boot, nothing but a blank screen. it will not boot as far as the keyboard. when you hit the power switch, you can see the keyboard light flash, but then that is it. i have taken the board back out,
and tried to do it bare with only the processor, ram, and video card. still. nothing. gentlemen, i have tried everything including clear cmos jumper and i can not get this board to boot for nothing. like i sald, i get initial keyboard lights flash when i turn on power, and that is it. no keyboard, no nothing. i wish someone would please give me some ideas here, because i am about ready to body slam it. thanks so much in advance for any help. GOD BLESS

Here's what I would do: 1. Replace the RAM with some other simmms chips or re-install the Ram you have already put in (when a system wont "post up" ram is the first thing to check. 2. Try another video card 3. Try a different p-100 cpu chip (I've got about 20 of em here if ya need one!) 4. Give up and get a new MB & CPU

Are you getting any "Beep tones" ?
Ususally there is one beep -- but if there is more than one, it usually means that the Power On Self Test has failed. The beep signals can be decoded to see what has failed.

Check the orientation of everything, CPU included.
Does the power supply keep running or does it shut down at the point the machine hangs?
How hot is the CPU getting? You should be able to hold your finger on it for at least 10 seconds, if not it's too hot. Same for the video card, or anything else for that matter.
Clean the contacts on video card and memory chips with a rubber pencil eraser, and reseat them.
I'm betting on a bad motherboard, possibly CPU, especially if none of Randy's tests work.

If the processor "heats up" as you say, then at least power is being delivered to the mobo.....if no initial beep.....change or reseat memory....if that doesnt work......it's the cpu or the jumper settings for the P-100: The settings should be 66 mhz , 1.5 multiplier , 54C on voltage ....anything else, she wont post up in all likelyhood.

Processor getting "real hot" could mean trouble. It needs a CPU fan if it doesn't have one. It might already be fried, if you can't hold your finger on it for at least 10 seconds.
Check CPU orientation, and try another CPU if you can.
Double check the CPU voltage jumpers too, it might be getting the wrong voltage.
