Ok first off we need a networking troubleshooting in pc guide.
Heres the situation I have 2 hard drives and one has 98se on it and the 2nd has win2000(ntfs partition).
I also have another cpu, and it has one harddrive, that has win98se on it.
I have networked my two cpus and with the harddrive with 98se on it, everything works fine, all the networking components, sharing and so forth works great.
The problem is when i boot to my win 2000 harddrive, nothing works(all sharing and networking). I look in the networking neighborhood and i do not see the other cpu at all, ive also pinged the other cpu and it is not pinging it. I know this is a toughy, and most of yall want get near this question. But direct me to a site, or talked me through it.Preferably talk me through it. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Thanks

Diurnal,
Read through your post and what immediately comes to mind is what I remember from a friend who does puter stuff with servers at a bank. "Win2K has built in security measures." Invited me to wonder if your inability to access outside of the system was somehow connected.
Perhaps something needs to be disabled to allow the accessing of files from another computer. Since there is no firewall that would protect internal transfers there might be something built into Win2K.
Well, it's late and my mind is wandering.....besides that my wife is watching LEXX and tonight it is a musical.....ARGH, I'm going to bed!
May all your dealings in life be win/win!

Don't know a thing about networking but i do remember most problems are usually concerning concentrator or interface cards? you get any FCS errors or superfluous Ring Purges?? Just a thought http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Yu want a peer to peer network betwen computers and using win2K, and the other computer is using win98se with ethernet card, and ethernet hub to share the connection.
In order to access shares on the 2k machine from the 98 machine without typing in a password, you need to do one of two things.
1. Create a user account on the Windows 2000 machine that matches exactly the name and password of the login account on the Win 98
2. Enable your guest account, which is disabled by default. This will allow anonymous login.

Are all computers members of the same Workgroup? (for Win2k: Right click "My Computer" > Properties > Network ID tab) (for Win98: Control Panel > Network > Identification tab).
Even if the name of the workgroup is different, though, you should be able to ping the other computer, if it has the TCP/IP protocol installed.
PS: You can download major portions of an Agilent (formerly HP) network troubleshooting book here (http://onenetworks.comms.agilent.com/network/download_submit.asp) and here (http://onenetworks.comms.agilent.com/network/PreviousChapters.asp).

Thanks gatorxx, stick around this site , we need people like you around here. Ok I enabled the guest account , like you said it was disabled,.
Also I created a new account on the win98 machine, and i added the new user on the win2k machine. But its still not working.DO I have to enter the correct path , when created the new user?(Like\\k6500\share)(does it have to have that share extension on it, is that universally or something?)
Or should my cpu(win2k) find it automically?
And kenya, i check the workgroups out and look at that site you gave me.
To be continued.....

I'm far from a networking wizard, but if memory serves me correctly, ping checks the physical connection, and should have little or nothing to do with permissions, sharing setup etc. mjc and I discussed this one on IRC, we think maybe it's either a driver issue with the win 2000 machine or IRQ conflict. Check for an IRQ conflict first, and check the NIC on the MS hardware compatibility list.

Check resources and irqs everything seems fine. I dont think im pinging the cpu right. If you all think of anything else , just let me know, but dont waste your time. I downloaded win2k help files, maybe ill figure it out sooner or later. But you know how those help files are

Resurrection of a NEW TOPIC> IT WORKS FINALLY, A MONTH OF TROUBLESHOOTING!!!!!!!! WOWEEEEEE CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!
Well i talk to one of my friends and he said on the 2000 drive check the ip numbers and make sure they match up to your 98se drive, so the other 98 drive can see it.So i went in to my ips in 2000 and change it to the exact #s of the 98 ips #S(gateways, dns servers #s also) and BINGO. It saw the drive , when he told me , a light bulb went off in my head and i was like that could be it. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Thanks for the replies, mission COMPLETED!!
