You may not have a free IRQ go to start>settings>control panel double click on system click on device mgr. double click computer icon at top of list you should see View resources, settings will show you a list of IRQ'S 00-15 ?? i think 9 -15- if all numbers show up then all IRQ'S are used after that I'm not quit sure what to do but i'm sure someone else will just hang on sorry if i'm not real helpful http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If you've followed Yoda's instructions to get into DEVICE MANAGER make sure the dot is in View Devices By Type. Head down to near the bottom where you will find Universal Serial Bus Controllers, click on the (+) and see if you have a listing for something like Universal USB Host Controller.

Would you let us know what you find?

I thought USB didn't use IRQ's. When I tried to install my cable modem, all my IRQ's were used, but I was able to use a USB cable modem without any trouble. Am I missing something?

Hey Kelly, This is the way i was reading it Usb ports are found on most Motherboards,W/98,W/Me,W/2000 and Xp provide you with a wide range of operating systems that support them properly. One potential problem is that USB takes another interrupt from your system, and many computers either don't have any free or are down to there last one. If your system supports PCI Steering, this shouldn't be much of a problem because the IRQ used by your USB controller should be sharable with other PCI devices. If you are out of interrupts, you should look at what other devices you can disable (such as COM or LPT ports) to gain back a necessary interrupt for other devices.
The big advantage of USB from IRQ or a resource perspective is that the USB bus uses only one IRQ no matter how many devices (up to 127) are attached. therefore you can freely add or remove devices from the USB without worrying about running out of resources or having recourse conflicts. If you aren't using any USB devices you should turn off the port using your motherboard CMOS setup so that the IRQ it was using will be freed. as we continue move to USB keyboards, mice, modems, printers, and so on the IRQ shortage will be less of a problem. As we have already seen, the elimination of ISA bus in our systems will also go a long way toward solving this problem as wellhttp://www.belkin.com/support/faq/F5U006-UNV.html#1 This is what I was thinking most likely wrong but good effort Glad you mentioned it gave me a reason to sit down and read some more . well time to go to work. Later someone needs to help this person with their problem still

Welcome to the PC Guide Discussion Forums Maggie http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Check out USB Man (http://www.usbman.com) for some pertinent info regarding Win 98 and USB chipsets (the name of the chipset should be in the Device Manager under USB host controller) some chipsets require a patch under Win 98.

When I clicked on the + sign it reads:
1)Intel 82371AB/EB PCi to USB Universal Host Controller
2)USB Root Hub
