I had Linux Mandrake 7.2 installed on a multi boot setup with Win98SE & Win2KPro- used System Commander to boot.Worked fine- hadn't used Linux in quite awhile.Decided to install Mandrake 8.0- where 7.2 used to be. Installed ok-I then reboot- it gets to the end of startup "puter name/login"-I don't get a chance to type anything the screen goes blank and the monitor goes into standby mode (power light flashing)- I've started over 3 times- what am I missing? Thank's- Dave
When you installed Version 8 did you do it as an Upgrade/update or full install?
I have found that the install will replace some But Not all of the needed system files.
(Using RH) causing corruption in a few settings. ( Mostly X settings)
Also Under 7.2 did you boot to expert mode or GUI?
I am unable to enter expert mode at boot up because install set default to Gnome
The login screen flashes and Gui starts .(Showing Gui login)

could it be X is misconfigured?
if so try Ctrl + Alt and one of the function keys F1 - F9 I think
F7 is for X

ur problem is simple ...
ur monitor / video card is not supporting the default X settings ... do the following steps
there will be a file " /etc/inittab " , u will find a line with
'id:5:initdefault:'
change that 5 to 3 ... and reboot ... Now ur system wont go to GUI mode directly , but stop in the konsole only . Login to ROOT and run "Xconfigurator" and try configuring the x settings ...
i got the same problem with my RedHAT linux 7.0 cd , but i donno abt mandrake ... i think my soln works with mandrake
