I just got the XP Home edition and I have been happy with it except for one problem. I play Motor City Online and on several occasions I have gotten some sort of feedback through the speakers that locks up the PC. I have a Soundblaster Audigy soundcard with the latest drivers on everything. I had Windows ME before Xp and did not have any problems. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Hey,
Depends on what kind of feedback you're getting. Some modern motherboards have onboard diagnostics that play sounds or something when it senses something wrong. Try to pinpoint what you're hearing and check your motherboard manual for possible solutions.
That's the first place I would look, just to rule out any motherboard or hardware problems. I mean, it could just be a coincidence that you're now getting problems after an install of XP. The problem maybe would have surfaced with ME anyway. Just a thought. If you're running XP, then you surely have a later model motherboard. Again, check the manual to see if the motherboard has some kind of onboard auditory diagnostics warning capability.
Other than the above, I'm not XP literate, so can't help any further. Hang tight for some more opinions, but you may as well rule out whether it's a motherboard or hardware problem in the meantime.
Good luck.

Are you using something like GameVoice? Do you have a microphone hooked up to the machine?
Try muting the mic input if you are not using it during play or try turning down the gain on it (would be on the mixer panel for the sound card).

I checked the motherboard earlier and there are no onboard diagnostics. I am not using a mic. It sounds like a high pitch whine that will not stop until I restart the PC. Thanks for the responses.

does this problem only occur when you play motor city? or does the problem occur when you play other games or audio files?
if it only occurs with motor city you might want to check with the software company for compatiblity issues...
try different audio resources for the soundcard...
moving it to another slot won't hurt either...

It occurs only in Motor City. I checked EA's site earlier and did not see anything. I will double-check my resources. I appreciate the fast responses.

I just thought of this. I may disable the EAX and see if that helps.

EA reports that lockups occur using the audigy sound card with motor city.
switch EAX to stereo and that should solve your problem
