My pc makes a strange noise (quite loud) while booting up. This only started recently. I wonder if it might have something to do with the cooling fan or the hard disc....
can sombody please help me ?

First and Foremost....If you are uncertain about opening the case up...TAKE IT TO A REPAIR PLACE QUICK!! If, on the other hand, you are confident you can open the cpu box...then do it and be sure you have the power cord UNPLUGGED!
Now:
1. Dont touch anything!
2. Re plug the power cord, Monitor & mouse. Look inside to see where the CPU fan and Hard Drive are located
3. Turn on the system and isolate where the sound is coming from
Although it is probably the cpu fan making the noise....It can also be the hard drive or the Power supply fan doing it......one of those three in all likelyhood. When you determine which it is.....someone here can help replace it.

thx for the answer!
but i have one more question:
i have to make this urgent task (thesis) on my pc (it's for school)
so i realy need my computer the next few days/weeks.
Do i risk any severe damage to the pc when i ignore the problem for a while???

Depending on what is making this noise, yes you do run the risk of serious damage. If the CPU fan is going out, it could quit at any time and you'd never know it, your CPU would be fried within 30 seconds or less.
If it's the power supply fan, same thing. If it's the hard drive about to bite the big one, it may or not last that few days, and you'd lose anything that's not backed up. If it's a secondary case fan, that wouldn't be major, and should hold out a few days without causing big trouble, just leave the case open with a small fan blowing into it.
Take a half hour and locate the source of the noise, a CPU fan is under $20 usually, and takes about 10 minutes to swap out, after the trip to the store to get one. Power supply and hard drive would take a bit longer, but you need to know what's happening soon as possible.

It depends on what is making the noise. If the fan goes may see lockups accure as the processor overheats. Which could cause serious damage to the processor.
If its the hard Drive you could lose all data on it. And it is quite costly to have some one retrieve it off of a Harddrive.
So I would recommend the same as Randy If you are concerned about opening
the case, take it to someone that repaires PCs quickly.
