ok me again.. When I boot my puter it takes forever. Does Scan Reg. have to start up in msconfig? I only have Nortons and Scan Reg. on the start up. So what's making it take so long? Can someone tell me what all needs to be checked in there? Thanks

Go here (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/win98/maintain/first.asp?frame=true) and click on "Clean Out Your Startup Group" to be sure your looking in all the right places for progs that start when you boot. Or you can look up & download a program called Startup Cop. I think it was a PC Magazine freebie.

Chris my start up says empty. When I go to msconfig the only thing that is starting up when I boot my puter is Nortons Anti Virus and Scan Registry. Does Scan Registry have to be checked for when I boot up? I went to the site that you told me about and did what it says and it says empty. Now what? Any other ideas? Thanks

Have you got enough RAM?
Have you defragmented the HD recently?
Is there enough free disk space for a swapfile?
Are there too many fonts installed?
Can't think of anything else right now.

Hi Fluff,
Can you answer a few questions:
When you say it takes forever, how long are we talking?
Is this an ongoing problem or one that has started recently?
Have you had any virus infections lately?
Have you cleaned out your temp. files?
Have you defragmented?
Have you made any software or hardware changes recently?
Sorry about all the questions but it may help to narrow it down.

Ok I have a 700AMD
384 Ram
I keep my puter very clean. I have Norton System Works so I run updates and Anti Viurs about every other day. I clean my cache and temp files daily. This still doesn't answer my question about do I have to have Scan Register checked in msconfin. It's checked now I just wondered if I unchecked it if it would help. This has been going on for along time. I have two computers Networked through a cub but that shouldn't make any difference. And I am hooked up through Cable. Is this enough info yet? Thanks for the help http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi Fluff, I wouldn't recommend changing the setting for scanreg, it is needed. Here (http://mikescomputerinfo.com/startup.htm) is a comprehensive list of programs that typically want to start on boot-up (if you have them installed) and whether they can be turned off or not.
I wouldn't necessarily say that the network connection isn't causing your problem. Perhaps one of the networking guru's could comment on that.
The only other thing that I can think of is, have you installed and un-installed lots of different programs, such as demo's over this period. Your registry may be full of unnecessary files. Have you tried Regclean (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,23283,00.html) before. This little application can speed up boot-up times. It will make a copy of your current registry and place it in the same directory that you install Regclean to, in case you need to change the registry back.
Hope this helps.

Hi Fluffy,
To answer your question...Yes.
ScanReg scans your registry and makes a copy. It is INVALUABLE should you have registry problems and need a back-up copy. And I really doubt that it is causing extended boot times.
When you watch the computer boot, what is the hold up? Manufacture's splash screen? Memory count? Win 98 splash screen?

ok see I have to sign in before my puter boots up all the way. And it takes forever for the window to come up that I have to sign into. Ok this is what happens... I boot up the Man. window comes up then the memory count then the windows 98 splash screen. Now this is where I have problems. My wall paper comes up and it takes along time for the little screen to come up to put in my network password. After that little screen comes up I have to wait for the cursor to start blinking before I can put in my password If I don't wait and put it in I get a blank screen. And have to do control alt delete and start all over. Thanks

Hi Fluffy,
Me thinks if all you have checked in msconfig is Norton AntiVirus and ScanReg you're causing yourself some kind of problem.
I don't know, but I've been told, you need to have systray and explorer on there too. Or maybe you do have them checked and it just goes without saying.
Other than that, it sounds like a network configuration problem. That's another way of saying "out of my league." Is it important to have this password? Could you just disable it?

Hi Steve yea I think I have to have the password because I have two puters networked by a cub and for the other puter to get into my machine they say I have to have a password. But hey if I don't let me know how to do it ok? Thanks for the info.
