View Full Version : Can't view HTML source code

Relevant Software: OS=WinME IE=5.50.4134.0600 OE=5 and Word=2000

Problem: In IE under View and clicking on Source does absolutely NOTHING; (nor does RightClick and choose Source). I have tried a number of sites (none of them ending .asp) and I cannot get to view the HTML for any of the pages, including my own website. If I save a webpage to my HD and open it in Word (as an HTM/HTML webpage) and then select View; the "HTML Source" is greyed!! I'm just guessing that this is because the code just doesn't exist. I can however view the code of an eMail in OE without any problem.

Solutions attempted without success: Repaired IE; Rebooted; Full uptodate AV scan; No help from Google or M$ - yet! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

History: It is some time since I needed to view source code so I don't relly know when this started (about 2months I guess). I'm guessing that it was around the time BadTrans appeared and it's possible that in setting up new defences (including uptodate M$ patches) at that time that "scripting" was affected adversely - though all the IE Custom settings are either set to enabled or to prompt.

Help Please: Before I start down the RRRR (reinstall, restore, reformat route), which sounds like grrrrrr, does anyone have any ideas of what has gone wrong or where (?Registry Settings etc.) the fault may lie or be detected. Much thanks goes your way for any help/advice/suggestions. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Paul,

Just did a Google search myself regarding your problem. The one I found solved the same problem by emptying the CACHE.

HERE'S (http://www.phpbuilder.com/forum/read.php3?num=4&id=3390&thread=3377)the link.

Thanks Whyzman. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I thought I was gonna be calling you "Wizard" but clearing the Cache didn't work for me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif (I keep it cleared on exiting IE by default, but cleared out the cache and history just to be sure).

I solved the Word problem (HTML Source = greyed) by uninstalling and reinstalling Office (just reinstalling did nothing). So I can now Save a webpage to disk and then open it from either Notepad or Word and get to see the HTML that way. These are the only HTML editors currently on my system. They are both the only diplays in IE Tools>InternetOptions>Programs>HTMLeditor but it doesn't matter which one is selected, still nothing at all happens, when clicking on View>Source!!

I also tried a reinstall of IE5.5 (though its not the best way to go I know) and tried another repair. Still no SourceCode is opened into Notepad or Word.

Anyone know of any other tricks/ideas - and whether restoring the registry to an earlier time might work. Every thing else is working fine but this is beginning to really "bug" me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Hi Paul,

I know you've probably seen this link. It's the only thing I could find.

The link (http://http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2fsearch%2fviewDoc.aspx%3fdocID %3dKC.Q203592%26dialogID%3d943188%26iterationID%3d 1%26sessionID%3danonymous%7c837810)

What cookies have to do with it, I don't know. But you might.

Hi Paul,

The gremlins are workin' overtime tonight. Let's see if I can get this link to work this time. I used up the edit time with server errors.

Hope it works. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi Steve and thanks for those ideas. The link worked but the advice there was no good; it was for WinNT and NTFS; the only relevance of cookies as far as I can see is that this issue can be linked to Temporary Internet Files. But that link did lead me to stuff and other links HERE (http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm)

No novelware on my system so that was a no no. Although it was for Win3.1 and 95 there was a suggestion of copying Notepad.exe to the Internet Explorer Folder. I did that, not expecting it to work, but it did work!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif View>Source immediately opened into Notepad. But more amazing was that after deleting the copied existence of Notepad.exe, it has continued to work!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif - now isnt that a strange one!?!

Also, the Edit button on the IE toolbar had been greyed. I removed it and then put it back again - and it now lets me edit straight into Word or Notepad!!

For completeness (if others have this problem) I did do one other thing and that was to change the settings so that the cache wasnt cleared automatically on exiting IE. I had planned to let this build up and then have something substantial in the cache to clear at a later date.

Thanks again Whyz and Steve for your help (and the moral support). These Gremlins sure have their funny ways. Wish I understood (or do I??) just what has been going on. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
