I am running Windows 98 second edition. I have a cable modem that runs through a Linksys router to two computers. One computer is on XP and this one is on 98. On this computer running 98, my internet connection stops working after I browse the internet for a while. It seems to fade away and then shut me out. It usually begins with the graphics on web pages not showing up...only text and then the text goes leaving me with one of those "this page cannot be displayed" messages. After I reboot, the internet works again only to eventually shut me out again. At first I thought my connection was just down but if I go to the XP computer (the two share the connection) it connects to the internet just fine. I have recently updated chipset drivers and changed the video card and this started after those changes. Could my network card be going out? - Rocco

funny you should mention this- as I have recently noticed the ONLY profound dislike on winXP.

while it is true that everything works perfectly, and no need to reboot for memory losses or any of the win98 freeze problems, the ONLY reason I need to reboot in XP is to reset my dsl connection. Sometimes it will just stop. (says it's still connected, but will not go to any pages or get/send email) so for MY purposes it is NOT connected.

I have tried closing connection, turning off modem and letting it 'resync' but still the ONLY way to get reconnected is to reboot!

I have yet to find out why, but am still looking.

Try setting up sysmon on the 98 machine and lett it run for a while...set up both BYtes recieved and bytes transmitted, both should be under dial up adapter, and see if you are still sending when this happens...

Also does it happen after a certain amount of time or just randomly?

Try closing all the browser windows and the going to Control Panel -> Internet Options and clearing the cache, instead of rebooting.

Hi........ I was having the same problems on one of my puters. I tried everything it just kept shutting down. Well come to find out I needed a bigger fan in it and now it doesn't shut down like it did anymore.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Good Luck... Let me know if you get a fan and if it works.

Thanks for the suggestions but I still am having the same problem. As for the fan idea, this thing has so many fans it it I think it is going to take off and fly. The computer isn't shutting down, it is just loosing the internet connection. I am on a cable modem that runs to a Linksys Router to two computers. I thought maybe the other computer was shutting me out but even with it off I get shut out. How do you "ping" the computer? I would try that if I knew how. What do I look for when it is being pinged? - Rocco
