I have an older PC running Windows 98. I only have a disc for Win95 and Cabfiles for Win98. I am planning to FDISK the harddrive and start fresh. Can I still buy Windows 98 disc anywhere or should I upgrade to Win ME or XP? Is Win 98 still the best? This computer is for average everyday home use, nothing fancy.
Thanks
Yes, Win98 is still available...in fact my local Wal-mart had a few copies as of a couple of weeks ago....
But, as to what is best, WinME and XP are both suited to newer hardware, if this machine originally was a Win95 machine then I would be a little skeptical of its ability to run XP, and even ME may have problems running well on it (I think ME has problems running on many machines...new or odl, but that is a different story...). IF all you are doing is keeping your checkbook, a little surfing and some other not so intensive functions the even Win95 would work well for the time being (until certain software, like tax-prep software will force an upgrade in hardware), 98 will fill most home needs quite well...and probably be compatible for a little longer than 95.

Hi Bryan1 If your pc is so old that its CPU has a clock speed less than 66MHz (like an old 486 of mine with 50MHz) then Win98 won't allow itself to be installed on it.

PS Duhhhhhhhhhh. I just seen you're already running 98 - sorry.

For everyday...nothing special type use on a computer older than 2.5 years, my advice would be to STAY with Win98... Second Edition. If you have plain win98 now, you can still get the 98 SE upgrade edition for less than $65.00 many places.....try google search or : http://www.pricewatch.com/
ME is a mess and XP requires pretty stout computing power...not to mention the incompatibilities with many devices.

It's my understanding that if you go online and download the recommended updates to 98 from the Microsoft website, you've essentially got 98SE.
