I come home today, and i find a strange error, that said something to the extent of "The downloaded file cannot be saved. There might be a problem with your hardware and network adaptor. Please try saving the file to a diffrent location." I had no idea why i would get a download error, for i had nothing downloading. I close the box and discover that everything except AIM (aol instant messegner) has frozen. I restart through the start menu. The restart takes FOREVER (at least 5 minutes) When windows comes back up, there is no sound. It also takes a while to finish loading once the desktop has appeared. I ran scandisk, tried the "last know good configuration" thingy but nothing helped. I sit and wait for windows to start up unusually slow. I discover several hardware problems, mostly with the network adapter and USB drivers. I attempt to reinstall the drivers through with the XP cd. Then i discover that windows recognizes the existance of my CD-ROMS, but will not believe that I have put a disk in.(at this point i was trying to reinstall drivers). i start thinkin that something serious is going on. I use system restore to set my computer back to yesterday afternoon, when everything was working fine. Nothing changed once the restoration was complete. SOO... i try to boot from the XP disc, in hopes of fixing windows that way, or reinstalling it. It freezes once it reaches the "Starting Windows" stage. This is when I am using the XP disc to restore the OS. I gave up at this point. Windows is stable for the mostpart, i can still use Office and other programs, but i havent tried printing yet. Could this be a hardware problem (god forbid, ive had enough hardware woes already!), or the nasty work of a virus? Thanx for your help.
PS- is there a way i can get to DOS before XP starts running? I might try formatting if there is no other way to remedy the situation. All i need to do is "C:\format c:" nuthin special.
a site that has advanced trouble shooting tips for Windows with this type of problem will also suffice.
