That's it, frozen at the logo screen. I can get to safe mode command prompt, but not all the way to the gui in safe. I can't get to normal mode command prompt either. I just installed a new power supply, and windows booted okay once. I used Linux Mandrake 8.1 a couple of times, but the second time I tried to boot windows, nada.

Inserted the startup disk and ran all disk utilities on it to no avail.

Linux Mandrake 8.1 still works fine. The grub loader seems to be doing its job.

Two questions.
1. Obviously, what are some things I can do to get win98se up again short of a fresh install.

2. I woul like to load win2000 and dual boot Mandrake, but I've heard it's complicated. Can anybody here give me some pointers.

You tried scanreg/restore at command prompt.
Also could be a resource conflict, have you added in new hardware, besides the psu? Try putting a card in a different slot and see if will boot.

I tried scanreg/restore, but just in case I didn't do it right, could someone please go over it one more time, or maybe give a link. I know it's been covered here before. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/redface.gif

No new hardware other than psu.

Tap on the F8 key when you boot up. Select Command Prompt.
At the prompt type in scanreg_/restore. Hit enter. The _ is
a space. Select the oldest date possible. Enter.

Also, if your Master Boot Record has taken a hit, do the above
one more time and type in scanreg_/mbr. The boot record will be
replaced. This happens quickly. Then re-boot.

Luck. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

hehe.. additionally- you want to choose a restore point only one day before the problem started.

This is because many times with win9x and trying this proceedure you can only get one try, and lotts of times if you try to go back too far (and it doesn't work) , you then won't have a second chance to get a more recent restore date.

(at least in my experience)

Thanks for all the help, but it was to no avail. scanreg /restore (I had indeed screwed up before) only seized up the way the logo screen did. Fdisk /mbr didn't solve the problem either, but it did destroy my lilo config.

So I took the opportunity and have upgraded (from 98se, not Linux http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif ) and installed win 2000. Now if I can only get my dual boot back, I'll be happy.

I only have one question left, and it's for BB66. Do you know why one yells "fire!" when having fallen into a vat of chocolate? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
