I need to install Win2000 professional.
I am runnining 98Sec Edition. I have as a operating system : Bios AX34 R1.20 AOpen date purchased 02022001, Harddrive is AX34 Intel Pent111 733MHZ
256Meg Ram pc/133 chipset VIA 694X 133mhz ATA/66 IDE.
My question is do I need to install or upgrade to a new BIOS? Also instead of upgrading to a new OS system, would it be more efficient to uninstall 98 and then have a complete new install w2000 professional???

Most of the experienced people on here seem to think that a new, clean, install is the way to go. Upgrading may allow problems to be kept/transferred into the new OS. If you have the Win 2000 full version CD it is easy to make a clean install.

1. First backup any data or programs you want to save. Once you delete the current partition during a clean install you will lose all your data. Make sure you backup onto CD's, disks or tapes etc as there will be no data left on your hard drive.

2. Insert the CD into your main CD drive.

3. Restart your computer.

4. Watch the bottom of the black and white screens. I believe the second screen to show up will give you an option to boot to the CD. Press any key (within a few seconds) and you will start. If this option doesn't show try the other CD drive if you have more than one.

5. Select new or clean install when presented with a list of options. This should allow you to see what partitions you currently have. Up until this point you haven't changed anything on your computer and can back out. If you select to delete one or all partitions it will ask you are you sure a couple of different ways. If you want to procede you can delete partitions, create new ones and reformat them. You can have just one big partition, at least I did on a couple of computers and it worked. Unless you have some specific reason not to, I would reformat to NTFS. This is the most stable and secure file system and the reason a lot of people choose w2k. Once reformatted you will be prompted to begin the install of w2k on the now clean and empty hard drive.

Thank you very much for your valuable info. I have notice that there is a product named [In Place Migration] this product is from Power Quest.
It specifies that it cocentrates esp. on Migration to w2000. And it has the capability of doing so with a smooth operation, it is also advertises its Partition magic utility for partitioning. Have you heard or know of this Power Quest utilities? And is it reputable or will it work?

Agree with the above. I run a daul boot system of 98 SE and Winn 2K. If you are going a daul boot system 2K must be on partition by its self. 2K will give you the options of which partition to put it on. If you want a daul boot system do not choose upgrade but new install. This will give you the option of which system to use. If you do fresh install of 98 put it on first, then add 2K. No you do not have to shange BIOS. If you just want 2K do the upgrade. If you run daul boot system I have found fat 32 works best for me.

One day I will be a pro, Thanks Andy

I am not familiar with In Place Migration. Do you have a lot of stuff on your current system that you want to keep using? Are you thinking a dual boot and have 98SE and w2k on the same computer? A simple clean install tends to run faster and smoother and you can add back in the programs you really still want without carrying over a lot of garbage from the old system. I think Partition Magic is popular but w2k has quite a bit of partitioning ability both at install and after install through the disk management program. Unless you are doing a dual boot I don't see why you need it. I am by no means an expert on any of this though.

Excellent, and no I will not even use w98, and just have the one os system, w2000. This will suffice for me, I did not realize that w2000 had the capability of those dimensions, as you have stated. What I will do is Uninstall 98se edition and use a complete new install for w2000. I hope that when I use the Uninstall for 98 that this will completely uninstall the whole of the 98 os. I assume i will need the 98 drivers to enable me to get to the CD rom to boot the w2000? Unless of crse that this Complete install of w2000 has the drivers>> Your info is really great and is very helpful. Again thank you and if you have any more valuable info please do pass on >>> Leo

You can use the 2000 CD to remove windows, just tell it to format your C drive ( the one with 98 on it ) , then after it's formatted the drive, you can choose " install ". That's all there is to it. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Be aware tho that 2000 requires different drivers than 98, so in order for most of your hardware to work you'l have to get the specific W2K software drivers for that piece of equipment. 98 drivers won't work.

Thank you for the tip on the drivers, I believe it will be better to install the drivers previous before I Install? Where would be the best area to get the necessary drivers, for w2000 Pro. Also maybe it would be a good idea to use my 80 G external hard drive and partition it, through the Magic utility service. Then I could use the primary partition esp for w2000 and use my normal HD C for my w98? Again thank you for the support it is a big help esp for us learners. Leo

First, it's not necessary to use the reply with quote; save us a little room and easier on the eyes. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Just use the post reply button at the bottom of the thread.

It would be wise for you to download or make sure you have available the necessary drivers for your peripheral's to be used in 2000 close to hand, and downloading them onto your 98 setup would work just fine, then you can just copy them over to your 2000 install when you need them 9 if they're executables ) if they're ZIP files, just uncompress them into a folder on your 2000 partiton.

I honestly haven't fooled with any of these removable drives before-standard IDE ones are much cheaper and faster. You may have to wait on someone here who has had experinace with them advise you on that.
