View Full Version : Internet Explorer problems

I have IE5 installed, but something has corrupted it, and I have noticed that when I start AOL the screen colours change.
When I try to access certain websites I get the message 'the page cannot be displayed' and the message 'Cannot find server' appears when I tried to access Microsoft help sites to download a new version.
I can't uninstall it as the uninstallation information is disabled, and I can't remove the program as it says a file is corrupt.
I haven't got a Windows 98 disc so can't do a full installation. I have tried to repair IE in Control Panel with no success.
Norton AntiVirus will not update either.
Have you any ideas?

I would check with AOL for some help, but also here are several versions of IE complete with installers (http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html) so that you don't need to be online for installation. But this has been going on for awhile, though, right? The reason I ask is that Microsoft was apparently making some site changes recently and I found it impossible to load some of their pages last week.

Hello calli123,
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
In addition to what Kay mentioned, you might just want to pick up the latest AOL software from a local retailer. I don't know what you have there across the Atlantic, but here in the US many stores have the AOL software for free distribution.
The AOL disk comes complete with their version of IE. Once you get on line using it you can download a clean version of IE. I actually use both the AOL version of IE and a "clean" version that I keep on my desktop.
Hope this helps. Oh, if you have the original AOL CD, just reinstall using it. It will search and say you already have a version of AOL and just follow the directions to get a second AOL installed. I think they might also ask if you want to dump the first version during the install.

I have tried AOL but they can't help.
I just tried your link, but 'Can't display the page'!
What the hell have I done wrong?

Hi,
OK, I'm just curious as all get out. Are you by any chance using Zone Alarm?

Big Blue's question is a good one..remember reading some compatibility problems here with versions of IE and ZA. Hoping Pianorak will post here because I know he has resolved problems with AOL, IE, etc. Don't have anything useful to add..just wanted to make sure this was on Today's.
calli123: Do you remember, or wrote down, which file it is reporting as corrupt?

Kay and Calli123 Pianorak to the rescue? Not sure, but for what it’s worth AOL version 5 and ZoneAlarm are known to have compatability problems and indeed did not live in harmony on my PC. Either disable ZoneAlarm (assuming it’s on your system) or try and get hold of Version 6, although that may be a bit of a problem since AOL is now pushing version 7, and I don’t know if version 7 will get along with ZoneAlarm. Yes, and try and follow Whyzman’s advice.

Received email from calli123, and he/she is still having problems with IE after using an AOL disk. Just researched script errors..lots of those off a Google search..fairly common problem apparently. In the process though, I found a couple of good IE links for those new to puters... IE Companion (http://www.netmag.co.uk/ie5/noscript.htm) and IE page (http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/internet_explorer.htm). I learned some stuff, and thought should post these links for others who might be experiencing similar problems as calli123.

First, great links Kay-added them to my already Gigabyte sized fav folder. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Can't really offer any help on this except; once i saw a site where a person had created an IE removal tool, never got a chance to try it { here is the link=98lite (http://98lite.net/) ).
My only suggestion is to install netscape-see if you can get online with them, however i'm not sure if AOL will let you use it, or how to configure AOL for Netscape. Haven't fooled with AOL in many years ( except to remove from people's systems http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ).
I always keep Opera ( and netscape ) handy so that if i ever have problems with IE i can still surf online and hopefully find a fix.
Once again i'll have to apologize for so little help in this case.
