View Full Version : Wrong CPU Reported?

Okay, I upped my system (ASUS P3B-F) Pentium III 450MHz from 192MB to 320MB. The control panel for Win95 OSR2 shows the processor to be a Pentium Pro instead of a Pentium III. I have Win98 SE bootable on a removable drive which reports the proper CPU type.
Is this anything to worry about (i.e. will this affect performance in anyway)?
Thanks.

Windows 95 just doesn't know how to identify the chip...the P3 at 450 is really just a Pentium Pro with added instructions...the core is the same

Hi ,
This is not a problem: Win95 was long before the PIII came out, so it has no idea what to call it. At the time, the Ppro was the most advanced CPU Intel made (for PCs), so it use the Pentium Pro description. You'll even see some PIIs identified as a Ppro.
No worries, but I would use Win98 2nd edition instead of Win95 - a little more stable and has USB support.

I have the opposite problem. After I upgraded from Win95 to Win98 SE, I noticed that my P233MMX CPU is now being called "Genuine Pentium(R)" under Control Panel->System. I'm pretty sure Win95 (I had OSR2) correctly identified the CPU as being 233MMX.
Is this a cause for concern or simply a cosmetic thingy?
