View Full Version : Does Windows 9x use underlying DOS??
Hey Gang,
Just wanted to know does Win9x use DOS as its underlying platform when performing operations?? I mean if I wanted to rename a file or cut or copy or delete a file, does the windows op.sys make the call to underlying DOS system or does it have some other method.
Why do we still have DOS in win9x systems and greater anyway. I mean you can do nearly everyting in Win9x GUI rather than doing it in DOS.
Someone who has been broght up on DOS might be able to explain that one to me.
Thanks every1

Yes Win9x does use DOS .
However it has been incorporated into the IO.Sys segment of the O/S
Remember the definition of DOS. Is “Disk Operating System..”
Without it or a form of dos. You wouldn’t be able to access your disk drives
The answer to Why is DOS ( Pre Win9x) still supported is simple $$
Many people still have and use DOS programs,
These range from inexpensive utilities and games to the most expensive programs ever written for DOS.
Without backward compatibility MS or any other company would be cutting these own $$ strings
if they discontinued support for previous version or programs

To ERR is HUMAN
To REALLY screw things UP, YOU NEED a COMPUTER !
Besides, DOS still has some usefulness left....you ever try to repair the damage caused by a virus, move a file or some other operation and Windows wouldn't let you because files were in use?
DOS eliminates those errors by doing the operation outside of the Win9x GUI....
Also there are a number of other things that should be done outside of Windows...like flahing the BIOS, certain hardware diagnostics, etc...

Beno To add to mjc's input:
Modern OSs allow file names up to 256 characters. A common problem occurs when a user copies files with long file names to a DOS machine that supports only the 8.3 file name format. DOS renames a long file name by truncating it and adding a tilde (~) and a numeric character. Furthermore, illegal characters in a file name (also introduced through typos!) can prevent DOS from carrying out a command and lead to all kinds of trouble. Therefore: take special care typing DOS commands.
