View Full Version : Acer Drivers?

In the continuing saga of my bare Acer PII-333 machine, I still don't have a working internal modem. And I suspect that this is also the result of not having correct drivers. While I was at the Acer site getting the video drivers I downloaded all the others -- it looked like a comprehensive set, with something about the buss, the modem, and I don't know whatall else. Fortunately the video driver loaded okay when I followed the directions. However the others uzip and start a .bat file which acts like it wants to make some kind of recovery diskette. So you give it a blank diskette and it says something like "device incompatible with image" and stops. Nothing I've been able to figure out to do with the files gets you any further. The READMEs are no help.
The message is -- "ERROR: Destination disk does not match image type".
Suggestions anyone?

Have you tried to format the floppy on that machine...sometimes the pre-formatted floppies don't work well on older drives (the heads are slightly out of alignment type thing). Also the drivers may want to be on a 720K floppy.....(hard to find these days). I would try to format the disk on that machine, and if that doesn't work try making the disk on another machine or replacing the floppy drive.....

Just a shot in the dark:
Might formatting the disk from a DOS prompt be the answer?
Read something about that, albeit in a different context.

I think it has turned out that MJC and Pianorak's thoughts are correct. Before I saw them I tried some other (old!) diskettes I had lying around and darned if it didn't work. With just a few more hours of work I got the modem driver/modem working fine; the sound card still is dead but I'll poke it some more with a sharp stick before asking for help.
As always, thank you!
