View Full Version : Manually change IRQ in 2000

Hi,

Does anyone know how to manually change the IRQ settings in Windows 2000? I have tried booting into safe mode, but it won't give me an option to change the IRQ setting as in Win98 (in the device manager).

My problem is that I dual boot with Win98/2000, and recently had to reinstall both OS's. After fixing the usual IRQ conflict with the video driver in win98, I booted up win2000 and found the screen freezing on me instantly. Since then the screen freezes from time to time, but not that often, still I'd like to know how to fix the problem. The video driver is on IRQ 11 and is sharing with the power management (ACPI). Last time I just shut off the ACPI in the bios, which caused win2000 to reboot before making it to the logon box, but after I changed the settings back, the video driver somehow had relocated to IRQ 9. I tried to do this again but it didn't work. I thought about going into bios and changing IRQ 11 to ISA/EISA, but my video driver is also on IRQ 11 in win98 and I don't really want to screw that up again since it's working now.

Any thoughts on this? I'm sure others have had this prob before.

Thanks

BF

One thing is you cant change the IRQs in the BIOS because windows overrides that. The only thing you can do is try putting some of your pci cards in different slots. That will reallocate the resources elsewhere.

by default, win2000 and winXP assign all irq's to one and then creates 'virtual' irq's as needed.

This is supposed to allow for many more irq's.

Ok, thanks. I'll try and move the modem around, it's the only PCI card I got in here.
