View Full Version : Removing Permissions

Hello,

I've screwed up and am asking for some assistance.

Basically, I removed the permission of the 'everyone' group at drive level to be only be able to read. Then I allowed the replacement of all permissions on child objects.
The other users that had full control was the Administrator and a couple of advanced users.

However, now I cannot run any program or even log on locally on this particular server. I can access all the folders thru Terminal services (I already had a session open) but am refused access whenever I try to open anything.

Worst of all, I cannot access the Security tab to restore everything.

Can anyone put me onto the right track here pls??

Ta,

Stuefc

This may be a bit late.....You should still be able to access the computer from across the network using "\\servername\c$" at the "run" window (if your an "admin"). Once your at the "C" drive you can take ownership and then redo the access rights.(advance botton, security page. An admin should always be able to open the security page no matter what.) Of course you can try the same thing from a terminal server session.

Post back if this doesn't work for you.

Thanks Ghost but it was a little late!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

What I ended up doing was removing the affected hdd and installing it on another machine. From there I could access the drive and take ownership and reapply the correct permissions.

Apparently the problem occurred because the 'system' account permissions were all turned into read access. At least that was what M$ reckon.

And with respect to your reply, I tried the way you suggested initially but due to the lost permissions it would not let me use the admin share. Try it and find out...it ain't fun!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Actually I have done much the same thing to myself too. I removed the "system" account from the Winnt directory once. Which prevented the computer from starting up. But in my case I had a 2nd NT workstation install and was able to add the system account back. (Since I'm cheap and don't want to buy any recovery tools. I just install NT workstation as a backup to my server installs)

Anyway, glad to hear you fixed your problem. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
